I'm not sure if this is the right place for this? Anyway, I'm a 20 year old man from ireland and was wondering about joining the uk police force. I've only got a basic l.c and am working part time in a pub. A lot of lads are going to australia but i'd rather stay close to home. Could anyone give me links and info on this? Another option is the u.k military?

Not sure about the police but with joining the military you would need to be able to get a british passport to join and become a british citizen.

That's just rubbish; did you make it up or are you simply trying to dissuade him.

    OP, follow this link.

You'd probably be better asking this in the emergency services forum. As far as I know, all uk police forces are under a recruitment moratorium similar to here. Also with most british police forces you are required to have been resident in the uk for 3 or 4 years prior to joining. Irish citizens are perfectly entitled to join the british military without restriction.

As said above, this would prob be better in the ES forum. Don't think there's any restrictions on joining the uk military (apart from criminal record, etc.). as for the UK police (excluding the PSNI), afaik you need to be resident in the UK for 3 years.

ya I was afraid of the 3 year residency rule. Can anyone live in the u.k or are there rules?

There are certain restrictions if you are a non-EU citizen.

i'm irish so I could just move over there and work for 3 years? Or if I joined the military after 3 years would I be eligible??

Irish citizens can work in the uk, free from restriction. You could either join the military, after which you would have worked up enough reckonable residency, or just work work in the uk for 3 years. If you were to choose the second option, keep every piece of paperwork you get. Lease, Bills etc, as these can be used to prove residency.

Yes it would. It will also give a proven track record of your time in the U.K.

New army recruits are now told that they will more than likely go to Afghanistan.

Don't rule out the airforce or the navy. There's a few of them in afghanistan but it's the exeption instead of the rule. I reckon you'd see more of the world as well with the navy if you could get in.

thanks for the info. On the work side of things is there much going over there to keep me going for the few years? On the military side, how long do you have to stay in your first term? jesus i'd be ****ting it going to afghanistan but what an experience itd be.

I presume working in the North qualifies for UK residency?
My friend from Dublin is Irish and lives in UK for several years. He has residency requirement met and is a special constable in Manchester but they dont seem to being doing much recruitment over there lately although he is hopeful of getting into one of the forces over there in coming years. He has a full time job too and English GF and kids.

As always, London has better work prospects. But, also higher living expenses.
If you already have experience behind the bar, you can still find bar
    or restaurant work.

The minimum term of army service is four years. But, you can quit basic training at any time if it's not for you.
The min term is for the Territorials is three years (part-time).

Try the military section of boards if you need any more info, and don't rule out the RAF or navy.

Im sure you could apply to join the Police Specials or the PCSO and work your way up the ladder, at the present time the met is recruiting from within the Police Specials, save them time & money on training and equipment, i can personally see this having the same results in Ireland with the Reserve Garda been recruited into the full time force, as they have all the equipment and uniform, it would just be a matter of retraining me thinks.

The last lot of recruits that came out of the collage only done 20 weeks training, compared to the 2.5 / 3.5 yrs others done, so 20 weeks would not be bad to do for retraining.

Nope the very last lot from the collage only did 20 weeks full training, that was the redesigned time frame for regular members.

This is prob off topic but like Charlie I'm a full time member and was in the second last phase to come out. I also know many people from the last phase as I attended classes with them on phase 4 and no way did they come out after 20 weeks! They did the 5 phases like the rest of us. Infact, their phase 5 was delayed a few weeks because of the visits earlier this year. They were attested after phase 3 which is 58 weeks or so. I'm not sure where 20 weeks is coming from?

OP on the work front, if your going to do bar work check out the hotels, some of them will provide live in accommodation at a fraction of the cost of having a room or apartment, plus they will feed you and you will have no bills, ie water, gas, electric, or council charges.

this is the case in a good few hotels in Edinburgh and Aberdeen, I am not sure about England.

If you do decide to join the Army, you should try joining one of the support regiments, rather than an infantry regiments, like the Royal Logistics Corps, you see the same parts of the world, difference is you might have much more driving and handling qualifications.

Mate if you have something you would love to be doing, do that don't settle.
