    Hi all,

giving one of these serious thought as my next car.
I know the 2.0d engine up to 09 has a bad reputation with filling the sump on failed dpf regenerations.
However, i can find little data on the newer 2.2d engine. Anyone on here got any information on them? I was hoping to pick up a 09/10 one in the UK in the new year.

    thanks!!

What version are you looking at Gyppo?

Decent power from that engine, most of UK models are 163bhp and 185bhp, the latter with 185bhp and 400nm would be great fun to drive.

I have a Mazda 3 MPS and looked at that engine before I went turbo petrol instead.

    From what I have read.

It has DPF issues but every new diesel has DPF issues.

If you will use your car in start stop city driving and only drive a short distance to the shops etc. You'll get a DPF problem in no time.

The engine is quieter than the 2.0 it replaced, but still noisy compared to diesels from BMW, VW, Honda etc.

The fuel pressures are fairly high for the wrong reasons, the 185bhp version runs in the mid 30k psi, that's fairly high strung even for a turbo diesel.

They supposedly have major issues too with cam chains stretching.

But VW, BMW, Toyota and all the others are plagued with problems as well. It's not just Mazda

Most are of the opinion that modern high powered diesels are complete crap, running too much boost, too much crap in them like dpf etc too cut emissions, too much technology etc.

Saying that I know a fella through a friend at work who has a Mazda 3 185bhp Sport model since new and has thrashed the **** out of it for 40k miles and it never missed a beat.

He got it mapped to 238bhp and almost 500nm recently and it's running 0-60 in high 5's.

Thing is biblically quick for a diesel. From a rolling start I could see it scaring the daylights out of my 2.3 turbo petrol Mazda 3 MPS.

    He gets 50mpg I get, 30 on a good day:D

If you can get the 185bhp version for a good price, I would go for it and sell it to me in a few years and I will get Joe in chippedire to do a job on it:D

What prices are they going for?

    What's vrt like etc?

Hi Squall, thanks for all the info.
The cam chain stretching problem was not something i was aware of - good to know.

09 mazda6's seem to be plentiful enough in 163bhp form, and seem to be priced around 8000 sterling for a ts2 spec with 50k miles.
vrt on something like this works out about 2900E.

    That's cheap.

That spec in the much weaker 129bhp 2.2 engine is almost 30k new.

Might be a bit of a saving if you wait for until around March when the vrt rate will be updated to reflect 2012 stock.

185bhp seem to be rare in the 6 and the ones that are for sale are overpriced.

This one here in red with 40k and full mazda service history, seems to be a good deal.Needs a spoiler though:D

Could you do it for 13k, all in?

Vrt cleared, boat, exchange rate etc

    What else have looked at?

Volvo S60 R are nice, would love one of them.

The father is driving Mazda 6 diesels for 5 years now, a 2.0 and lately a 2.2. No hint of a problem, but he does a 40 mile commute every day.

A full, verifiable service history is a must, preferably one that was done before the 20k km intervals. It's stored on the key as there isnt a service booklet. I've said it before but if you dont know the history of one of these cars and its previous use I would be slow to buy one as you dont know how diluted the oil was with diesel and for how long it was driven that way.

Have it scanned at a Mazda dealership.

To be honest, you're probably looking at the wrong car for under 22k km a year. They are probably the most extreme example of how a diesel is unsuited to low mileage. Unless a large proportion of your usage will be out of town runs I think you might be better off looking elsewhere.
