Advice on Speaker Setup

    Hi guys,

Looking for a bit of advice here on computer sound systems. Hopefully this is the right spot - as it didn't seem entirely appropriate in the Home Sound Systems department (even if some of this computer sound systems would work as such - that and I'm searching for a system exclusively to use with the PC and not to the tele) I had a look through some of the old threads but nothing seemed to match exactly what I wanted to ask. So I apolgise in advance if I'm rehashing something. Anywho, less yapping, more explaining.

Right now, I'm looking for a new sound system for the computer. If you don't mind, I'll describe the area to add a bit of context.
The computer is located in a corner in what, well, I'd describe is a middleish sized room. Around 12x10 feet approx. (if I've done the maths right, that is!). Computer as I say is in one corner, I have a TV in the other corner across from it and a couch in the opposite corner - the room acts my living area.

So the big option is whether to look at a 2.1 Speaker System versus something like a 5.1 system. I question whether a 5.1 would be ideal, given that the room isn't massive and obviously trying to find an appropriate place to set up the rear speakers properly and inevitably trying to hide wires. But it is something I'd consider if 5.1 would be worth it.

Now, what do I do mostly with my computer. Mainly gaming. It is also used as a media station. I play music on it and I would stream video's to the TV from it. Now, this leads to me a question regarding a 5.1 system. Will it play audio and video files in the 5.1?

The majority of my files are ripped so I can keep my libraries digitised. I recall in the past when using a family 5.1 system that when I played files, generally I would only seem to be getting 2.1 sound of it. This is why I've been wary about plunging in and getting a 5.1 or above system. It seems a bit silly to pay the extra and the speakers not actually working, right?

This is why I wonder would be wiser to run with a 2.1 system, since the system is intended to be exclusively used for the PC. Would it be wiser to invest in a nice set of that than try to go with a 5.1?

Anyway, I hope that is enough info. If not, let me know and I can add more. Many thanks in advance for your help.

racsersedge, hope you don't mind me bumping your thread. I have the same question, so didn't want to open a new thread with the same query as yours.

I can't see the value in a 5.1 setup if the PC is in the corner of the room as you won't be in a position place the speakers correctly in order to fully appreciate a surround sound setup. I used to have a 5.1 system for my PC when it was in my now sadly defunct games room :( (that's kids for ya). When I moved it to the living room it was in the corner so I just used a 2.1 setup and to be honest didn't really miss the surround sound.
