I wouldn't say they are the same ones you are thinking about. If it is the Aldi specially selected range then it would be a great deal but I doubt it.

I purchased the above promo pack the X-mas eve, the sell by date stated 30/12. I went to cook them last night and discovered they had gone off, red to brown.
This has made me think twice about the meat, either thier packaging is incorrect or the meat is not as stated....

    Oh dear.

Did you open them? I wouldn't worry about the colour, if they smell then I'd consider worrying (and even then I'd probably eat them anyway).

School boy error here mate - brown is good for steaks, it means they have matured... Red bloody steaks aren't half as tasty a brownish steak.

Unless it smells like a homeless bums big toe then you're alright...

My personal choice, But i rather buy all meat from the local butcher they have far superior cuts of meat (no hidden knots of fat inside the "meat"), better deals and nice friendly IRISH banter from them :)

for a bit of Irish banter, how much would 2 steaks (21 days matured ) cost?

It's the fat that flavours the meat, no fat no flavour

I bought two huge fillet steaks in Aldi a few weeks back - it was some of the nicest steak I've ever had - really tasted fantastic and tender as anything. I think they are usually 13.99 and they were down to about 8.99 iirc. Great deal at that but I don't buy them at 13.99. Bought the others to but the Fillet is by far the best

If I could find a butchers who dry aged their beef I would buy from them but I just get funny looks when I ask.

Aldi's dry aged steaks are really nice - ribeye is my fav

Have you tried this place yet? http://www.thepremiumbutcher.ie/10-premium-beef. They do dry aged beef. Think there may be a voucher code on their FB site too.

Yes i understand this. My point was the knots/newtork of hidden fat in Aldi steaks are nothing like the striploin steaks from my local butcher, people are crazy buying meat in a supermarket when their butchers is FAR superior in every way. An you dont get served by a square head person with a frown, you get a nice chat with your local Irish butcher. :)

I'm not a fan of buying steaks in Supermarkets but the fare from Aldi is a whole different ballgame. Full of flavour, tender and noticeably better quality than what you'd pick up in the usual suspects.

Also, it can take time finding a butcher with the right mix of attention to their craft, quality sourced meat and customer focus. As with any other business, there are many who fall short in some respects.

I have never found steak as good as Aldi's. ...I suppose I could pop into my local butcher and have a chat about that on the way home.

Any word on whether there actually is a deal going at the moment or not??

The outside of the meat goes brown and sometimes even a tinge of green appears from the aging process. If for example a person dies then rigor mortis sets in but its the total opposite for beef. The natural enzymes start to break down and tenderise the meat giving it it's melt in the mouth texture and flavour.

What you actually did was throw out two real great steaks :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 150 ✭✭Avatarr

Unused muscle is tender but not necessarily full of flavour (fillet), working muscle is less tender and full of flavour (strips/sirloin). Save yourself some money and go for cheaper cuts and get on first name terms with your local butcher, who will look after you.

Rubbish talk. First of all, the Aldi specially selected meat is Irish meat, and if you read some of the posts above, everyone knows it's great consistent quality. Perhaps you could explain how the people in Aldi somehow hide a "network of hidden fat" inside their steaks?
As for the square head person with a frown...
I always find they're very nice. Always hot chicks walking around aldi/lidl too

I have just made a big pot of turkey curry and I know there are a couple of Aldi steaks in the fridge. Probably with brown on them and full of hidden fat.

    Damn you, Bargian Alerts!

Had one of these aldi steaks today and it was perfect. As good as anything you would get in a butchers.

And they were first recommended to me by my uncle who worked as a butcher for 30 years so as long as they are fairly fresh there's no reason to doubt the quality of the meat

I don't think Aldi have diversified into horse steaks thus far. The honourable midg.. oops, err, gentleman may wish to peruse the aisles of his local French supermarket for said item. I believe their heads are somewhat less than square.

Only Dawn, AIBP or Kepak (the three biggest Irish producers in the country) have the scale to supply Lidl/Aldi. I suspect they're all supplying both, certainly Kepak are the no.1 supplier of the Musgrave Group.

I doubt you will be able to source it in Dublin. There is just no demand for it and it is frowned upon, akin to Chinese eating dog. It's bad meat anyway, like an extremely tough steak. What would you do with it? You could try Downeys or O' Tooles in Terenure, (can't remember of them which does the unusual meats like kangaroo, croc, etc), if they don't have it, they could tell you where to get it, if it can be got.

Definitely, horses for courses. In my opinion the Aldi steaks are better aged and more flavoursome than either of the local butchers we generally used. I first bought the Aldi ones when they were reviewed in a national newspaper, and have used them regularly, since.

You can also talk to the checkout staff in Aldi, you'll find most are friendly. :)
