Superman has been on TV loads of times. Why not star wars. I don't think i've ever seen it on terrestrial TV?

ITV have shown it, usually when they do one of their movie seasons with it and show all six within six weeks. I suppose the fact that they are so long, and, despite being one of the biggest movie franchise of all time, it doesn't have the same mainstream appeal and not everyone's cup of tea! Same reason with Lord of the Rings too I reckon!

I'm guessing it's too expensive with star wars current popularity their probably creaming it at every opportunity. It was on the tele for all of the ninety's.

it's all down to the rights holders.

for star wars you can expect to see TV films when there is a new movie release or when they want to push DVD sales.

some films get shelved, I can't remember seeing the original Maverick since the Mel Gibson remake came out.

Looking at satellite channels, movies are released for IRE /UK / Eu / South Africa at the same time so it's up to the rights holders, not the TV stations.

RTÉ has been known to show Star Wars from time to time. Given that there are six films in the series and it now seems de riguer to screen all six together in Lucas's favored order (though there is no real reason why this should be the case, unless it is a stipulation from Lucasfilm) it is a big commitment for a broadcaster to do this.

This being Star Wars, I'm sure they'll crop up again at some point. I would not be surprised if Lucasfilm/Fox release them in the cinema yet again with further changes at some point in the future (an appropriate anniversary perhaps).

TCM showed Maverick a few months back, caught a few episodes and it made me go dig out my complete series of it. They're showing the High Chaparral at the moment but I expect them to screen the later series of Maverick soon enough.

I wouldn't mind seeing them again. I haven't seen them since i was a kid.

It is one of the most well known films of all time. Ask anybody from a 10yr old kid to a 90 yr old granda and they will all have heard of star wars. It just got me thinking why are they not on more.

I had up until 2 years ago a VHS (younger posters can google what that is) of A New Hope that was recorded on ITV back in the mid 80's, its so old it has that ad for casettes with the animated skeleton on it (" and on...and on...and on") and an ad for the "premiere showing" of Indiana Jones And The Temple of Doom later that week for christmas. showing age now....

It used to be the ultimate Xmas movie(s), but I think the series lost a lot of general goodwill with the prequels. Not to mention almost anyone inclined to watch them probably already owns one of many versions of it already so no need to tune in anymore.
