Hi bit of a smell in the airing cupboard the last few days so I decided to clean it out thinking a dead rat or something but no ....so I did a bit of research and felt the heating zone switches and one of them is quite warm to touch even tho I havent had the heating on for the last two days ....could it be that causing the smell ???

Does it smell sort of like rotten fish?

If so, that's heat damaged Urea Formaldehyde.

The majority of electrical fittings used in Ireland and Britain are made from Urea Formaldehyde, it's that brittle hard plastic that is used.

When heated, it produces a vile smell like rotten fish.

If the switches are hot, you should probably get an electrician to look at them as they are a fire hazard. It could be a loose connection or an overload.

It sounds like it could be melting plastic or burning cables. You would really want to call an electrician.

Also, make sure there is no possible source of gas e.g. was there ever a natural gas or LPG gas installation in the house in the past ? It's possible something leaking.
Could it be coming from a neighbour, if you're in an apartment / attached house.
