from my better half for Xmas but we didn't realise that I needed a bass amp as opposed to the standard one I have. I am in Dublin tomorrow. How much would I need to spend just for one for the bedroom. Is there a certain power I need? I really know nothing about it and have been plugging it into the iPad since yesterday. Any suggestions will be gratefully received :)

If you're practising at home, you don't need anything special. I've my 500 watt bass rig for gigging which lives in our studio, but at home, I play my bass through the same 10 watt practise amp I use with my normal electric. It's fine for practising at reasonable volume.

I have it and I'm using an iRig. Will a bass guitar not work with a regular amp? Thanks

By "regular" I assume you mean a guitar amp. It's not so much the amp itself as the cab/speaker. It is not designed to take the bass frequency and output. Better to get a small bass combo for practicing at home. You could try http://www.adverts.ie/for-sale/music-instruments-equipment/guitar-bass/basses/bass-amps/451/page-1 Usually some good bargains there.

If you play through a guitar amp you run the risk of breaking the speaker. The low notes of a bass can make the speaker move more than it's designed to. I often run my bass into a little guitar amp but I don't turn it up loud and keep the bass knob turned pretty low.
You can get a little bass practice amp for not too much that will do fine for practising at home. Any power level should be fine for just messing around.

+1 on Demeyes, if you're just pootling about at home on it, any small guitar amp will be fine. You won't be cranking the volume on it to do any damage, and even if it pops, you'll get another one for peanuts. I've been playing bass into mine for nearly a year now at reasonable home practise volume, and it's done no damage.
