I would go for the best data package for a start.

Buy it Sim free for a start, directly from Apple. DO NOT buy an iPhone with a network plan as you'll just pay through the teeth for 12 / 18 months and probably spend the cost of 4 iPhones by the time your finished. Also given new iPhones come along every 12 to 14 months, you'll be stuck in continual contracts if you decide to upgrade. Lastly, its so handy having the ability to put any sim card in if you travel etc.

Meteor do a €25 per month "sim only" plan. Its a rolling contract of 30 days. You get 200 mins, unlimited texts and 1GB of data. Perfect for the iPhone.

I'd be honest and say I'd hold off for iPhone 5. I know thats a big debate around here, but there are only about 3 major differences between the 4 and the 4S and they are all performance based (Screen, Processors and Memory). Its not a significant upgrade, and I have a feeling iPhone 5 will be released in or around June 2012 (It will have to be to keep Samsung at bay) and a lot of 4S users will feel very hard done by as it will have to be a hugely significant upgrade.

My rule of thumb is to buy every second Apple generation i.e. iPhone 1, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 5.

As you can see, the iPhone 3G and iPhone 4S fit nicely as stepping stones between major releases.

I have a 4 and wouldn't waste my money on a 4S for the only huge difference which is Siri. I have friends to talk to and fingers to type with instead.
