Audi engine version and sourcing

Could anyone advise whether there's a significant difference between the Audi 1.9 and 2.0 litre diesel engines in terms of reliability, economy, refinement etc?

I'm looking for a 2008 A3 diesel - Are car auctions in the UK still the cheapest place to buy?

A recent UK auction price for a 2008 Audi A3 Sportback 5 door with 51000 miles went for £8500 GBP.

Some 2.0 versions are a nightmare leliability wise. Some are ok. 1.9 is a much safer bet

Oil pump issues on 2 litres affect the transverse mounted ones Afaik. I'd try ensure it was a CR as opposed a PD.

    If it wasn't a CR I'd buy a 1.9. It's not that bad really.

The 2.0 injectors are sorted now Mick. They have a recall for affected units in the U.K.

Is there any way of ascertaining whether it's a CR apart from checking the engine number on the registration document? I'm hoping to buy from a UK auction through a third party

If it was a CR would you have any hesitation or is the 1.9 an all-round safer bet?

I also read here http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=91299 that the A3 2.0 TDI PD with the BKD engine doesn't suffer from the oil pump drive problem.

DO you seriously want to buy a car from a different country, without even seeing it, from an auction house?

    Madness if you ask me.

But, I'd go for the 1.9TDi, and get a remap.

Preferably not but if there's a significant price difference then yes.

Where would you recommend buying from?

If you're set on buying in the UK, then at least travel over and view the car with your own eyes. You'd be amazed at what you can miss by only looking at pictures of a car. Unless of course the person buying the car is someone you know and trust.

Personally, I'd be buying privately or from a dealer. I'm not sure if there is that much value left in the UK anymore, chances are you'd probably pick up a similar car for the same money in Ireland.
