I bought my Ma a Kindle for Christmas, I have no idea how to download books to it.

I'm not very computer savvy so can someone give me a step by step guide?.

    Thanks.

Have a look on the Amazon Kindle Support site, pick your Kindle type and there are tutorials and videos to explain all.

    Simple :)

Set up your account on Amazon, via the kindle or PC, if done on the PC (probably easier!) sign into your account on the kindle using e-mail address and password. Providing you have provided card details when signing up to your Aamazon account, you can start downloading then to the unit itself.

If i recall correctly, there's numerous free books too.

Apparently it needs wi-fi to register before I can download any books, load of bollocks!

Well, how else did you expect to download the books? :D

Perhaps the 3G Keyboard model might have suited your needs better if wifi wasn't available.

    €60 extra for the 3G!

I thought I'd just have to hook it up to my laptop and away I go but unfortunetly not.

Download this http://calibre-ebook.com/ program and when you are getting books if they are not in the MOBI(PDF etc) format this will convert them for you. a bit hard to describe what im talking about but I know you will need it if you are getting books that are not from Amazon ie free from the web

You can get a heap of free books from http://www.gutenberg.org/ - all the out of copyright stuff.

To get them on to your Kindle, you first need to register your device - follow the instructions on the Kindle - this will give you an email address, <yourname>@kindle.com and all you need to do is email the books (.mobi files) to that email address and they will magically appear on your kindle.

Depends on what kindle you have, pain in the arse alright.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding here, but if your laptop/PC is connected via cable & router to the internet you can download the books to the laptop/PC and then transfer them via USB to the kindle. You don't need wifi per se. If you have no internet connection at all, then you definitely needed the 3G Kindle.
The only other option now is to get the books through someone else's internet connection.

If you've registered you don't need wi-fi to download books, any sort of internet connection will do, just plug in you're usb and go to Amazon.com.

So download the books to your laptop, connect the Kindle to the laptop via USB (it will register as a USB drive) and drag and drop.
Or use Calibre as suggested, it will detect any connected KIndle and you can just transfer the books to the device.
