Hi, I'm using a HP Pavilion Slimline s3431 on vista. It just switches off right in the middle of browsing, constantly. Anyone know what could be behind this?

If the power is just cutting off instantly, its most likely overheating.

Boot in to safe mode (tap F8 while the pc is booting up) and select that option.

Go to Event Viewer and check to see what file it crashed on. Could be anything from hardware to a driver issue.

    Open Event Viewer

Event Viewer is an advanced tool that displays detailed information about significant events on your computer. It can be helpful when troubleshooting problems and errors with Windows and other programs.

Open Event Viewer by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, clicking System and Maintenance, clicking Administrative Tools, and then double-clicking Event Viewer.* If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

    Note

Here's another way to open Event Viewer: Click the Start button . In the Search box, type Event Viewer, and then, in the list of results, double-click Event Viewer.

    Good calls.

PC cooling incidentally works like a Hoover (or indeed a vacuum cleaner) sucks in air to cool itself but also will suck in dust.... Find a way to blow this off your heatsink and you'll be ok (98% chance)

Low tech is fine, blow or brush etc. - Or else pay for a can of compressed air and air blast it.....

Good calls is right, the fan is working overtime to cool the unit down, on high speeds when theres nothing happening at times.

But I'm a stickler for keeping the airvents clear and dustfree so I'll have to go inside over the weekend and see if theres buildups anywhere. Thanks.......

Edit...........thanks again, a good delicate vacuuming did the trick, very quiet fan once again
