I'm seeing it more and more these days, its like people are forgetting the word 'Christmas' or they're just being lazy sh1tes writing 'Xmas'.

It actually annoys me when people verbally say "Xmas" too. Oh and don't start me on atheists who celebrate Christmas! So what's your opinion on the word 'Xmas'?

    Just curious...

It's quicker to write than Christmas.

    So happy Xmas.

X is shorthand for the cross/Christ, so Christmas = Xmas.

I don't believe in god or any of that stuff and I celebrate Xmas.

Here's an article about taking Christ out of Christmas. As usual the PC brigade had to get in on something that had absolutely nothing to do with them.

    Happy Christmas!!!!

Atheist here. Purposefully use Xmas as Christmas celebrates Christ, which of course, I don't.

For me it's happy Xmas or happy holidays or seasons greetings.

However for some it's hannuka or diwali so whatever floats your boat.

Not going to get offended by someone using Christmas, hope that they won't be by me not.

Sorry boss. I never said anything about anybody is trying to take out the religious meaning of the word or anything of the sorts if that's what you're trying to get at.

Apart from the Greek and Latin derivations, it is a drag writing Ctrmsas cards while drunk. There ya go. So Xmas is dead handy. And it makes the postmans sack lighter.

Its gas to hear the jesus freaks bitching about christmas being hijacked...guess what lads? Thats exactly what youse did to the winter solstice. Sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander.

Xmas I can cope with but anyone who uses the word 'crimbo' deserves to be locked in a room with Jedward and the entire Cliff Richard back catalogue

Yeh, neither did I. You moaned about happening "more and more these days", when you could have done a quick search to see there are legitimate recorded uses and an etymology dating back hundreds of years at least, so you assumptions aboout it were wrong.

Yeah if I were you I'd stick to writing the Xmas tbh. I'd rather see "Happy Xmas!" written on a card as opposed to "Happy Ctrmsas!"

I'd say the vast majority of people in Ireland these days who say 'Merry Christmas' mean it purely as a seasons greeting with no religious connotation. If anyone takes offence to it, it's their issue tbh. Likewise Happy Holidays does the job fine.

Why do people need to make issues out of this cr@p?

I was just thinking exactly the same after getting a text from a friend.
Personally I hate "Xmas" and prefer old, good "Christmas".

We have 100 year-old 'happy xmas' letters at home. The use of the word Christmas is almost absent from them. Nothing to do with atheism or respecting religious beliefs... Christmas is just a long word to write over and over again.

People also used the figure & instead of and a lot more when they wrote in longhand.

Everyone seems to assume that shorthand arrived with the text message. Not so.

No, then it would be called "plusmas" :

    + mas

Xmas is as irritating as bedamned!

I think anyone who gets mad at things needs to remember christians turn the other cheek and never cast the first stone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,538 ✭✭✭flutterflye

Christmas has little to do with religion anymore, and more to do with tradition and sentiment, so why shouldn't a atheist celebrate christmas?
I'll probably stop celebrating it when my kids leave home tbh - I'm just not really bothered with it much.

On the actual point of the thread - who gives a flying shyte? Call it whatever you like, or don't, whatever.
