    Hi all,
Thinking of booking a weekend (with herself) away to fly into Hahn with Ryanair, just wondering is there much to do or which direction to go from there, Frankfurt or Luxembourg? is there much to do in either place (travelling mid January ), should be cold but no time off later in year. any advice appreciated

I've been to Luxembourg and it is well worth the trip. Not half as expensive as I expected it to be. I would even go as far to say that it is the teeniest bit cheaper than Ireland. Not by much, but I definitely expected to spend way more. Really beautiful city and even just wandering around it for a few hours is well worth it. Nightlife seems very good there too. And there's a lot of Irish people living there too so don't be surprised if you end up meeting a few on a night out.

Frankfurt is a fairly ordinary business city. not much to see or do there imo.

Heidelberg is a historic old uni town, but not that big.

Don't know much else about the area. :o

Another vote for Luxembourg from me. I flew to Hahn, hired a car, went to Luxembourg and visited Trier on the way. It was an excellent trip.

A vote for Heidelburg from me. Frankfurt isn't a romantic weekend destination.

Frankfurt is ok if it's a 'lads' trip.
And 2 nights is enough there.

Drove to Heidelberg from Hahn a few years ago. It's a really nice old town but it's almost 100 miles from the airport which mightn't be ideal in January.

My brother in law spent some time in Trier and Koblenz and thinks they are both really nice places and not too far from Hahn.

I drive around that part of Germany regularly in Jan/Feb each year and the roads are fine. In any event, you should ask for winter tyres on your rental car for added security.

Luxembourg sounds good here from other posters. i've never been.
but i have flown into Hahn on a few occasions. lovely airport. hassle free.
i've always got the Ryanair bus to either Cologne or Frankfurt, both roughly 1hr 45 mins.
Cologne, i would recommend for a couple, Frankfurt "for the lads".
For the bus, go outside the front door, turn right, walk for 100yds,Cologne bus is No.7
dont hang round too long in the airport if catching these buses, they are timed to coincide with Ryanair arrivals and leave very quickly.!

I work in Dusseldorf, live in Eindhoven.

Frankfurt is the worst city to visit as German cities go, expensive, boring, not much to do. Basically its the German version of Dubai, with very sparse nightlife and everything is shiny and new.

Winter tires actually are legally required in Germany now. So it is not just for security, it is also to avoid being fined.

No, All Year OR Winter tyres are required when it drops below 4 degrees.

If you rent from any company they'll always give you a car with All year tyres as a bare minumum, paying a rental company extra money for winters is a waste of cash.

Just rented a car in Hertz there in Dusseldorf a few weeks back, didnt request Winters and they were on the car anyway.

Most people drive on all years and don't bother with the Winters at all.

Completely unrelated but I've been driving across the border for 4 years and have never seen the cops checking for All years/Winters, its only really when they see a moron sliding all over the place and it turns out they have bald summer tyres on the thing.

Watch out for Speed Cameras and Red Light cameras, the fines can be massive.

True, all-year tires with an M+S logo are acceptable as well.

I have never heard of them doing spot checks either. But in the unlucky case of an accident, you are certainly in even deeper trouble if you are found to be driving on summer tires.

flight times from/to dublin are unsociable at best.
aerlingus offer a better selection of flight times.
frankfurt main is only 90km from heidelberg.
Use hahn only if you want to visit somewhere geographically close to hahn.
