Yes you can change the spring in an M4 - why do you want to? Changing a spring is normally done if there is a drastic power drop, or if your gun has crept over the limit. Otherwise, in terms of upgrades, people tend to drop in replacement barrels, hop up rubbers and motors, instead of having to go near the gearbox.

To change the spring in an M4:
1.) Split the receivers by removing the front body pin (if the gun is wired to the front, you must separate the spade connectors at the fuse/battery connector assembly and pull them through the delta ring area) and sliding the upper receiver off.

2.) Remove the stock and stock tube (if your gun is front wired you will have to remove an end cap of the stock tube before unscrewing the retaining screw inside the stock tube).

3.) Unscrew the motor base-plate (bottom of pistol grip). Disconnect motor and remove. Unscrew pistol grip

    4.) Remove magazine catch

5.) Tap out the retaining pin just above the trigger

6.) Remove second body pin, and pull gearbox out of the lower receiver.

7.) Using a small screwdriver, hold the spring guide in place by applying downward pressure (screwdriver should be inserted into the rear of the gearbox), and remove all gearbox screws noting where each one goes.

8.) Separate the two halves of the gear box shell, removing spring and spring guide first. As you're opening the gearbox, push the gears through with a screwdriver (it will make your life easier), trying to keep everything in its proper place.

9.) Insert new spring, re-seat everything, reassemble and test/chrono

Doubt it, internals wouldn't be rated for 1J, they'd break rather quickly. You're better off getting a cheap bolty.
