Using Wifi only on iPhone 3GS?

I'll be away next month and I was wondering if it was possible to use my iPhone but only through WIFI for checking emails and the like. I've been stung in the past where I've thought I was on WIFI but I've lost the signal and the connect goes through 3G and then ended up being charged the daily rate.

    So is it possible?

As above but also if you turn on airplane mode you can turn on wifi only. Airplane mode knocks off all aerials but you can manually turn on wifi and bluetooth.
