Springing sound from Clutch

Drove a car I'm interested in buying. When I change gears and release the clutch there's a springing sound when the pedal is released. Sounds exactly like when you get off a spring mattress or seat. Is this something to worry about or something that some lubricant would fix?

    Cheers

Would have been useful if I'd said what car it was in the OP. It was a mkIII Mondeo :)

I had an '04 Focus in which the clutch pedal had a spring on it.
It did make a kind of bedspring noise every time I pressed the clutch.
It even snapped one day, jamming my steering in a roundabout, had to yank the wheel round to dislodge it.
