Would ye think it's a given that you get a better discount if you walk into a garage and you are buying without trading in a car?

    theres 2 sides to it.

dont trade in - straight sale and the dealer doesnt have to worry about shifting another used motor = profit.

    or

trade in - get money off, dealer takes your car and sells it = profit.

    or

sell your own car privately for more monies and use that against your new car (cash upfront gets good deals)

You will always be at a better advantage buying straight with no trade in.

depends on how cheap you get a trade-in into stock for.. The can be more money in a deal by taking a trade-in, especially if you can trade out of it for a profit.

Would ye think it makes a difference as what type of garage?

Eg. If you go to a garage that deals mainly in Ford and you're trading in a Toyota you can expect less discount

But the OP could also pocket by selling their car themselves and still availing of a straight deal discount.

Agree entirely, but some people just don't like the hassle (and possible pitfalls) of selling privately.

Ya that's what I'm trying to weigh up. Not sure if I want the hassle of trying to sell privately

Well any garage that you trade your car in will have to go to the trouble of servicing it, valete it, give a warranty with it and then sell it on a price so that they make a profit on it. So in order to do that they need to buy it alot cheaper from you.

If you don't want the hassle of selling privately then you will pay for the convienence of the garage taking it in as a trade-in.
