    Hi,
Im just about to sign up for a private EMT course and before I part with my hard earned money, I thought that it might be a smart idea to put the question out there-are there any jobs for EMTS out there? Ideallym I would like to progress to paramedic and am planning on using the EMT as a stepping stone? Any advic is greatly appreciated :):)

Absolultley none, dont do your EMT course just to get a job out of it because your chances of getting employed are zero in todays climate. In addition there are alot of people with 10 plus years in voluntary organisations who will have alot of first aid experience and a host of other training eg first responder etc who will get preference by employers. However if you do wish to join the either the DFB or National Ambulance Service in future by all means do the course, However I do beleive that to practice as an EMT you must be involved with a private ambulance service, state agency or a voluntary org. You can still do the course if you are not involved but I do not think you will get PHECC registers I am open to correction on that.

You can register on successful completion of course but to maintain registration down the line and to meet CPD requirements you ideally would need to be active with a vol, as previously stated their is little work out there for emt's. The HSE recently advertised for emt's and will do again in the future but you'll need to get C1 licence.

The HSE EMT recruitment might leave vacancies in private companies?

    That's a possibility alright.

Yes thats true, However if you were the employer and you had two applicants to choose from both EMT'S both with the driving licences but one had 5-10 years expereince with omac, civil defence etc and had a host of other complimentary training courses which members of the vol's are priveleaged enough to have access to. Who would you choose. I know who I'd employ.

Yeah, but the HSE PTS thing is a bit of a game changer. A lot of the EMTs with the experience you allude to are going to be moving to the public sector.
A lot (maybe the majority) of experienced vol EMTS aren't looking for new careers, already having their own.

I think the statement that there are "absolutely none" jobs for EMTs in the same month the HSE recruited for hundreds of them is a bit off the mark. The current HSE recruitment is what a lot of EMT students had in mind when they did the course, and it's bound to create openings elsewhere.

By the way, I'd always advise someone thinking of doing an EMT course to get involved with a voluntary agency if they aren't already. Skill fade will be just too much of an issue for someone with the piece of paper but no ongoing practice.

Hi lads, thanks for all the responses.

Cheers for the advice . Yeah, I want to fo it with a future view to getting in to the paramedic training scheme some day. Unfortunately, I never did the leaving, but Im working on it now :) and was going to do the EMT so that I can gain an edge when I eventually get the LC and get my arse in gear to be eligibe to apply. Im currently working with the order of Malta and I guess will be able to practice the EMT skills as required.

Would anybody have a link to the advertised EMT jobs by the HSE? Thanks again guys :)

Someone told me a few weeks ago that there are over a thousand EMTs trained privately in Ireland in the last few years, and most are not working in the field. That's anecdotal, so don't quote me on it.
