    Hi guys,
first time poster on the GAA forum! I just saw that the GAA website have published a sanction form for players wishing to represent Australian clubs in the GFHAA. With the huge level of emmigration to Australia over the past 5 years and with that trend set to continue, should the GAA not be going further to embrace this diaspora abroad?

How about an Australian provincial champioship with a link into the Irish club championships? Australian states (Queensland, NSW, etc.) represented in the All Ireland county championships? With the level of talent heading out to Australia for work, i wouldn't be surprised if teams from Down Under could really compete at a high level in Irish championships!

What do people think? If New York can compete, why not Australian cities or states? At the moment, a senior Perth team would probably kick the bejaysus out of New York in the All Ireland....

quite simple really. it takes 5 hours and approximatley €300 per person to travel to New York.

It takes 24 hours and approximatley €1000 per person to travel to Australia.

sorry to burst a bubble, but it will not ever happen, and logistically alone could never happen.

The interstate championship within Australia itself is even tough to arrange and co ordinate. throw Ireland into the mix and it would be a disaster.

Ah yeah of course the logistics are a nightmare! Still would be great to see the GAA maintain some link to the Australian federation.

There are active GAA competitions all over Australia, there's an active competition between the GAA and the AFL as well as the fact that there's a constant stream of player from the lower population base to the larger, imvho Australia is doing fine :)

in fairness to HQ, they do a lot for the Australian GAA set up and help it quite a bit. the international rules series when is held in OZ is a bumper time for the GAA and they send over a few different sides to play interstate teams in exhibition games. its a nice idea to have the states involved here in some shape, but would never work.

the only option I could see working would be to have an international tournament, have london, New York/San Fran etc, mainland Europe, Asia etc have representative sides and play a tournament over a weekend somewhere.

It's a nice concept but the logistics would be a nightmate for any GAA team and with a lot of county boards running on financial deficits as it is I can't see there being much support within the association for it, unfortunately.

might be money well spent tho.....the format mightn't be perfect but if the time energy and money spent on the compromise rules bullsh1t was spent on marketing some sort of an international competition it might be worthwhile. why not host it say in Oz one time, west coast USA next time, east coast next time, and wherever the demographics allow it. try it every 2 years or something. say allow losing provincial finalists to enter against representitive teams from NY, California, NSW or something.......
