I remember at the time been underwhelmed by this match but some matches when I revisit them are so much better. You miss the storyline of the actual grappling :o

So erm did ye like it, or was it a boring spot fest which some have claimed?

    Enjoy this match? 28 votes

It was absolutely a spotfest, but it wasn't dull.

It pretty much had to be a spotfest as Taker was in a bad state, so needed long rest periods between big bumps.

Not as good as HBK V Taker but good all the same, major credit to HHH he did very well with Taker and nearly all the work :p

The last 3 Taker Mania matches fall into the good but extremely predictable. If you go into a match knowing who's going to win you won't enjoy it.

I thought the build-up was far too slow, although sure the PPV was being sold on Rock's involvement; they had a very interesting segment on the final RAW but they could've done that earlier in the build - thought it was a bit late at that stage.

It was an excellently put-together match, but as with Taker these last few years, ya gotta work around his mobility and use it as a storyline piece. I did like how it was a very different match to Shawn's. Of course the outcome is never in doubt but if they can get a "maybe...not?" doubt in your head, they've done their job.

I liked the build up, they sold it like a big time boxing match. The "no speak" return segment was awesome.

The match itself was great too IMO. Not an all time great, but a pretty cracking watch. Easily in the top 5 matches of the year.

It also gave him a good reason to go missing for 11 months being stretchered out like that.

It's hard to see who he can face next year, as it seems his matches are built to be (or expected to be)m the match if the year now, as well as adding to the streak.

If its Kane, it's gonna be a seriously slow, lumbering match. My money's on Trips again.

I thought that segment was great too, but every segment after that involving them sucked until the one with Michaels, who carried the segment imo. Undertaker really isn't very good with that stuff though, the editing team probably could have done a great job if they were allowed mention their past match and all.

Watched the match with a bit of a biased attitude towards HHH, which of course makes me incapable of suspending disbelief of Hunter winning and all. I was definitely a lot more willing to allow myself to love the ones with Michaels, if that makes sense?

I really liked the build up to their match. They didn't need some goofy, over-the-top angle or some convoluted storyline. All it needed was two of the biggest names of the last decade and a simple reason for them to wrestle. They got the money segments spot on (the first and last segments were spectacular) and the video where they had everybody put over the importance of the match really brought it to the next level. It was all that they needed and they nailed it.

On the match itself I thought it was the second best match this year (though I've yet to actually watch it back on the DVD so I'm basing it off what it was like live).

only match i really enjoyed at this years mania, wasn't a big fan of how they made hhh look super strong after the match finished but the match itself was great fun

I think that plays nicely into this years match with the idea that Undertaker is more human and vulnerable than ever and HHH is still going strong.

The reason it was so good is because of how strong Triple H looked. Given the power he has IRL and his history, the idea was already there that he might win. That didnt really happen with Michaels. There were times during those matches alright, but with Triple H, it was there before the match even started so every pin attempt you (or at least I did) felt that it could have been the end of the streak. When he hit the Tombstone I was convinced it was over. As best I can remember, that didnt happen any other year. Close calls, yes. But I was convinced Triple H had won with that Tombstone. Stuff like that made it great imo.

in terms of what they could do given the state of Taker, it was the absolute maximum it could have been.

the story was fine, the drama was there, and with any Streak match, there has to be that niggling doubt that Taker will win. and that Tombstone on Taker by HHH, was fúcking awesome. it went from a fine match to a very good match with that one moment.

i also loved the finish with Taker desperately choking The Game out to keep going. that almost took it to great.

but it really was just a spotfest.

Give me an ROH match worked this particular way?

^ Nigel McGuinness Vs Tyler Black at Take No Prisoners 1 springs immediately to mind for me. What a god awful over rated bag of crap that was.

On topic - I thought HHH v Taker was ok. It was not in the least bit gripping. Nor was it boring. But with the winner in absolutely no doubt it took from the drama. 3 snowflakes from me.

Still can't understand how this match is so highly rated by some. Voted for Meh but I'd be somewhere between Meh and Dull spotfest really.

the ending was brilliant undertaker desperately chocking hhh out while hhh was reaching for the sledgehammer and then his arm dropped dead. WOW

this is a tough one to vote on because tbh I found that it started fest as the dull spot fest described in the 2nd option but as spot followed spot I and most others seemed to get into it and the finish with the tombstone, chokeout etc was class. It was wrestling storytelling 101 for me and turned from meh to OMG so quickly that it deserves to be rememberd as better than it actually was, which is actually how iI believe it is rememberd and is also the reason this thread arose.
