Insurance claim after black ice car crash into wall

Hi folks, just looking for a few pointers/do's and don'ts from anyone who might have gone through what I did couple of weeks ago. My car slipped on black ice on a bend on a back road, then went into a slide and then into a wall before rolling on to its roof because of a ditch right after the wall. I walked away from it, no-one else involved and I had no passengers. It was a few minutes before anyone else appeared on the scene. I rang the Guards, they came out, everything was fine, etc.

I've sent off my forms, and the assessor has put a value of €5950 on my car. I was speaking to the insurance co this morning to check they got everything I sent off. They say that they'll send out a cheque for €5950 minus the €300 excess and also minus an €850 quote for the car from a local scrappage co., so €4800 in total. I then get the cheque for the €850 from the local scrappage co, so eventually getting €5650 in total.

I've never gone through this before so was just wondering if there's anything I can watch out for or if all looks above board so far.

Thanks in advance for any input.

Everything looks like it was done above board...

Were you happy with the estimate they gave you for your car ?

Can you tell us the year and model etc and we can check you weren't done over..

Hi, thanks for the reply. It was a 2005 Opel Astra 1.4 Life Petrol, with about 68,000 miles/110,000 kilometres on it. I wouldn't have a clue what value to put on it.

Can you trust a cheque from a scrappage company? I'd bet they don't accept cheques from customers so I'd be wary about handing over the car without geting the money into my hand.

Don't the insurance companies deal with getting rid of a write-off i.e. shouldn't they deal with the scrappage people and just hand over all of the money to you, minus the 300 excess?

If you do accept the money as offered you could shop around and possibly get a better price from a different breaker.

The price they gave you is roughly about right.. you might have haggled another 500 if you had upgraded alloys, spoiler or a sunroof etc..

Seems all above board OP, I just wish all Insurance company were as co-operative as yours.

The insurance company have paid a good bit over book value for that!

I'd want the insurance company to pay the full amount (less excess) and get the salvage company to pay them.

Thanks for the replies folks. I think it was just very straightforward as there was no-one else involved and the car's wrecked, so I'm glad to be getting it all behind me now. I'll give the insurance co another shout in the morning to see if they can manage the scrappage themselves.

In the meantime I'm going to indulge in a bit of window shopping...
