Where are you based, I was in TK Max in Stephens Green yesterday they had a good selection of all that stuff. Only issue might be thermals sizing but that had a good selection. Took a bit of wondering around to find everything as they had them spread out in a couple of locations in the shop.

They do, huge selection of socks and a a reasonable selection of thermals. They also had good selection of goggles, helmets, ski jackets and ski pants.

TKMaxxx has everything: jacket, pants, thermals, socks, goggles, gloves...

Found it hard to get a decent pair of pants so I bought them from planet sports, very reasonable shipping too.

Also I wanted gloves with wrist protection (Level) so I bought pants from
    www.blue-tomato.com

Kildare Village is good too, Nike don't sell stuff anymore (which is a pity, as it was great value & quality) but there are a few other places that do.

Googles from TK Maxx are pissing money up a tree! They are rubbish avoid.

Everything else they do is fantastic. Especially the Marino woll thermals and the Salomon/Nordica/K2 Ski socks

Googles spend the bloody money or dont bother! Oh and Buy Oakley practically indistructable and incredible after sale service.

well its my first time so I don't want to spend a fortune on goggles, should I not get any then?

You won't really need them unless it's snowing. Wait until you get to resort and see if you need them. Or even if you have a mate that has a pair you can borrow. TBH goggles are the ONE thing I'd advise to defo leave until buying in the resort. The selections are huge, and you'll get a decent pair for less than 40 blips that will keep you going for a few seasons. The cheap ones here are crap.

If you are going Christmas week or just after you will be fine as the weather is set to be blue skies and sunshine so you wont need them at all.

You can pick up a dirt cheap pair if you need them when you are there.

I got oakleys on adverts.ie for 60 quid, another pair up there ATM http://www.adverts.ie/ski-board/oakley-o-frame-snow-goggles/1168142

There is a danger of injury associated with sunglasses. Also goggles generally give better definition of the slope than sunglasses.

Personally I'm a believer in cheap things being a waste of money. If you're lucky you can get cheap gear that works as well or better than brand name stuff. But mostly its crap and you're just wasting the price of it rather than saving the difference.

QUOTE]There is a danger of injury associated with sunglasses[/QUOTE]

I would love to see the research on this? Chances are in a fall the glasses will be gone from your head before any impact!!

I personally only wear Goggles but then I do 5-6 weeks a year on snow and mostly off piste stuff.

Agree on spending the cash and getting better kit but for a beginner who may never use it again and is probably going to only see blue skies, is it really worth spending the cash?

    [

    I am calling Bullsh*t on this ^^^

Definition of the slope will depend on the lenses not goggles v sunglases Oakleys dark iridum lense is the same if it is in a pair of Crowbars or a pair of M Frame sunnies. Next time you are on the hill look at the lenses in the gogs most people have.

An hug % of goggles sold have high light lenses (Like the shiny orange mirrored ones, Fire Iriduim etc) and are used in all conditions so are effectively usless on low light days a there is no light transition through the lense.

any other suggestions for bricks and mortar places for gear (cheap-ish) - specifically ski pants/ gloves..?

Dublin area would be a bonus.. tried TK Maxx down the country - not too impressed

    thanks

The selection of stuff in TK varies a lot shot to shop week to week so dont write it off completely. Places I know of that sell gear:

    Great Outdoors, Chantnam St
    Base Camp, Middle, Abby St
53 Degrees North, Blanchardstown and Carrickmines
    Snow & Rock, Dundrum

The North face in kildare village have gloves out at the moment (at least they did last weekend). 39.99... They were the business. I've about 3/4 pairs from different brands so the woman would kill me if I came home with them! They were easily worth the money.

Oh yeah forgot about North Face and Tog24 in Kildare Village Outlets.

    Anybody ever used these guys??

noticed they do free shipping on orders this weekend
No shipping costs for any ski orders made till Sunday, 8.1.2012 11.59 pm CET! No matter if cross-country ski, alpine ski or any ski-packages. This offer is valid for all EU countries.

The Outdoor Adventure Store, Liffey street have jackets and pants with 50% off marked price. Most other brand jackets and pants with 30% off marked price. TOG24 gear is cheaper here, than in the TOG24 outlet store at the moment. Worth having a look, if people are looking for something inexpensive but decent quality.

Guys at Conrad are superb! Know plenty of people who have used them over the years with no issues.

I was in 53degrees north (Blanchardstown) yesterday. Their selection of gear seems to be a lot smaller this year. They have a big Helley Hansen display, but the rest of the brands seem to be limited to one or two items.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,335 ✭✭✭conno16

53 Degrees North are prob struggling bigtime
if they survive this year they'll be doing well

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,208 ✭✭✭Fattes

That rumour about 53 has been knocking about a few years.

Mind you I asked them to order in a pair of gloves for me and they where 35 euro more expensive than ordering them from the uk

    thanks for the replies^:

I was looking for bargain basement prices for ski pants as am only going for a weekend this year

managed to find a pair of medium men's in Aldi Rathmines on Saturday for €22 - only tiny amount of stuff left as that deal was on a few weeks ago - mostly women's stuff

I must check out that place in Liffey St - got some good deals there before - I'll probably have a look in Decathlon too in France

sailing shop in Dun Laoghaire (near Dart station) has some ex-rental gear - jackets and pants for €20 each , only had xxl in ski pants though - also they have discounts on regular ski pants (Columbia I think) - up to 50% off

Normally when I've been in TNF Kildare village I havn't seen a lot of value but last Sunday I picked up 3 x BaseLayer LS (light) plus 1x Ski Socks or €37.
Plus would echo Lemonys comments on the great gloves at 39.99.
Also the sentiment that I've 3 pairs of gloves so could bring myself to justify buying a new pair

Today's update for anyone looking for good prices on ski gear is as follows... :)

Blanch - Not a lot in 53 degrees it seems... even with 33% off we didn't find anything worth picking up.

Millets is worth a shout - across the road in the Dunnes block - they had a fair bit of discounted stock including base layers for €10-15 (mostly XL or XS tho) and gloves (€15 each for some decent men's and women's). A fair few discounted women's socks too IIRC.

TKMaxx came up trumps for some mid-layer tops, and men's merino socks (think it was 2 pairs for a tenner) but not much else.

...oh, and Elverys has some cheap hats - a men's striped beanie for 7.50 and a ladies bobbly ear-flappy tassle-y clearly-going-on-a-ski-holiday woolly pink number for 2.50 :)

In town, meanwhile, Great Outdoors (off Grafton St.) has a lot of stuff discounted, including tops/bottoms. Got a decent pair of salopettes for 49 (guys' XL) and the OH got 3 pairs of good socks for €20.
