sky box, freesat, free to air ?

i am looking for advice re the above titled thread ,I am with chorus on mmds at present, i have just upgraded tv to full hd, and am looking for best option to increase my channel availability both sd and hd, i know i will need to get a satellite dish so in order to maximise my choice of satellites i can look at ,what box should i get, say if i get a sky hd box non subscription does that limit me to the astra satellite, or to put it another way how much free to air english speaking content is there out there, and what is the best kit to recieve it

Best choice by far for HD channels is with $ky, but you'll pay big for it.

If you go the Freesat route, then you will get 5 HD channels

and of course, once you have bought your equipment, it will be free after that.

thanks for reply i live in the west of ireland so i dont think i can pic up that freesat uk service

i am trying to work out is there any difference between say buying a sky hd box off e bay, or buying a freesat box

Freesat is received via a satellite dish, so doesn't matter about your location (you may be confusing it with Freeview, which is received via an aerial in NI/UK).

thanks i think i have sussed it now, sky box has limited uses other than for skys own service freesat is the way to go, there is also free to air but less user friendly

If it's Freesat you want,make sure to get a HD box,a PVR (recording box) if you can afford it.It's a once off payment anyway so you may as well get the best you can.

As said before Sky have the bulk of HD channels but Freesat has a few.Better than the MMDS system you have at present.

I own a Humax recording Freesat HD box. A very good unit.

There are others out there, and some can be picked up reasonably from the likes of Argos (see the Bush one), although some have reported more software issues than the Humax, which is more or less fairly rock solid now, given its age.

not really a big sports fan, what range of free to air english speaking channels are available on various satellites
