Some Coffee Troubleshooting

Was wondering if anyone help me try identify an issue I'm having.

In work we have a delonghi kg79 and a mocha pot.

I understand that this is not a great grinder but I'm not sure it's the grinders limitation that's giving me headache.

I've tried just about every combination possible on the grinder/water/amount of coffee but just can't seem to get a half decent cup from this setup.

I've tried several bags from hasbean all bags were within 3 weeks of roasting.

So far I've managed to get cup's of what I call "dirty water" with a fine grind or as fine as the delonghi can do or a more full bodied cup but with very bitter taste regardless of the bean with a more course grind.

The only way it's drinkable is to fill it with hot milk and sugar, which defeats the purpose :)

    any pointers much appreciated

thanks PPC yea I tried James's guide yesterday, in fact for some reason it tasted more bitter when using freshly boiled water instead of cold.

    I'm a bit lost.

    Its gotta be the grinder.

I'm open to the possibility but can you explain why?

I understand it's a fairly low end grinder, but for a mocha pot I wouldn't have thought it would be that big of an issue as most recommend a fairly course grind.

If the grind size is inconsistent you could end up over extracting the smaller particles in the grind.
Considered getting a hand grinder? I've been using one for the last few weeks while i'm getting my Vario fixed and it does a great job for filter, and an ok job at espresso.
I've a Dualit grinder in work that has the same burrset as the Baratza Maestro series and its fantastic for filter for the price. Might be worth considering an upgrade down the line.

    ah ha, makes sense :)

If work are willing to shed out cash I'll upgrade ;)

    I'll keep on at it.

Obviously it's a poor grinder but it's also possible that you just don't go for moka pot coffee? If you have a French press at home, you could bring it into work and see how you find the combination. If it still tastes awful, the grinder has to be the problem. If not, you don't like moka pots...
