Increased tax exemption

    Greetings
I am looking for a second opinion regarding claiming back taxonomy my redundancy.

In total I received 32k before tax which worked out 28k after tax.I Was told i could claim "increased tax exemption" of a further 10k.This was to be paid at the point of receiving my redundancy payment from my employer but they where waiting so long for the tax office to approve it they just gave me my payment and I was told to apply to the tax office at a later date.

I have been bounced about to different people within the tax office and now I've been told I'm not due any tax back.
    Am I missing something?

Am I right in saying when I applied for the increased tax exemption of 10k I should have received the 4k in tax that I paid.

    Any feedback will gratefully appreciated

Ps I was told previously that the increased exemption was applied to my payment.I received my payment 27/03/2010.tax office approved my employer to apply the tax break 23 may 2010

Yiu'll need to find out what exceptions your employer actually applied. The basic is something like 10,160.00, and ya get an additional 725 for each full years service too.

Only your ex gratia is taxable, statutory payments aren't.

If the increased exemption has already been applied, you've all of your entitlement already applied.

Have you looked into Top Slicing Relief?

    Thanks for the reply

My employer only employed the basic tax exemptions. They did apply for the increased tax exemption but by the time the tax office approved it was to late as I already received my payments.
At the start of the tax year I applied for top slice relief and received €600

Good stuff. If the tax office approved the increased exemption for you, and it was too late for your employer to apply it for you, you should be able to get the refund through the tax office.

They should reduce your taxable pay by the approved amount (usually 10,000 less any amount you get from the superannuation scheme either at the time of redundancy or in the future)
