    Hi All

Just something i can across in the Fiance's car.

2000 Renault clio 1.2 le sport with 87k miles.

Speedo on a drive to town just stopped and read 0 on speed.
Stopped the car in town and shut it down started again and was working fine.
Couple of days later it happened again and it done this every couple of days.

Had a mechanic check it out as i done research on this.

Mechanic found nothing wrong but told me its either speedo block which is the panel with all needles on it might be going.

From my research i found that it can be a common problem. But it could be the speedo sensor on the gearbox too.

So i found this test for the speedo

Press the speedo trip button and turn on the ign wait about 4 secs and release button. All the clocks should go into test mode...fuel/water 1/4 1/2 3/4 full and so on, the rev/speedo move 20% each time....so if they are all working there is no problem with the cluster its the sender in the gearbox.

I did this and all was working fine so i said to myself its got to be the speedo sensor.

But as the days went by the engine light came on then off which indicated to me the speedo sensor as i had checked the conection on this.

went to main dealer and bought the replacement for €70 i think and popped it in and problem gone.

To access this you need to jack up the car and slid in under it with of course either axel stands or blocks to stop it dropping.

As you are on your back the sensor is on the left of centre with a steel cover over connection remove steel cover then plug and pull upwards keeping as straight as you can.

Then the refitting is the reverse. You might need to add gearbox oil to it as some might come out when removing a drop or two should be fine.

    Hope this helps
    John
