    Hi,

Just wondering if someone could help me out.

If one or more teachers commence work on the same day in a secondary school and are qualified in the hDip in the same year, are they equal seniority or is there a way it should be ranked?

Thanks a lot, tried googling circulars and stuff, didn't get much, a link would be amazing to one if anyone has any information,

    Thanks

I know in primary it's to do with points scored at interview, might be the same at second level even though you're not comparing like with like?

In the VEC system, seniority is based not on service to a school, but on service to that VEC. So you could have 2 teachers starting at the same time in a vec school, both qualified at the same time. But if one of them was already working in another school in that vec scheme while the other was not, then the first one is considered the more senior.

In our school a few of us started together, seniority was decided on who got the job first, there were two that got the job on the same day. One had a few years teaching experience before coming to the school so he was ranked above the other person who started with him as it was that persons first job.

    Em, why does it matter?

Ahh yes the Great Public/Civil service. Seniority based on how long in the job not how good you are at the job,

If you are asking this question in the context of who would get a job/be redeployed etc.., don't forget that the needs of the school can outrank seniority.

In fairness it's difficult to see how seniority could be based on anything other than how long you are in the job. There's a clue in the name.

yes, if it is in the case of redeployment and one teacher has a subject that is needed and the other teacher has one that is surplus, the one with the surplus will be redeployed/let go. That can happen even if they were there longer.

Seniority is a very dubious method of selection. It is potentially discriminatory on age grounds depending on how it is used. I have been wondering for a while when will it be challenged.

I would say being better qualified ought to be taken into account before how long a person's been in the job but ultimately, seniority should be based on who's best at the job.

It feels like the OP was passed over for something and feels they've been hard done by. Apologies if I'm wrong OP.

No, didn't get passed over. Thought that I was being misplaced and wanted to change it just because the list went up in the staff room as it is.

Just curious more than anything. Found out in this case we have equal seniority (according to JMB) and ASTI say that its equal and can be sorted in the presence of all by a coin toss.

    Thanks all
