first off try 1 oe 2 different sims to make sure they both work and then go to settings>general>about. look for modem firmware if it's anything other than 01.59.00 then it's factory unlocked but if it says 01.59.00 then it could be software unlocked and updating will lock it

Where will you be viewing these? Online?

No. I am meeting the sellers.

Turn the phone off and back on. Once your sim works in it make a call to ensure mic and speaker work, turn the call to loud speaker and back. If you have headphones plug them in to ensure the jack works. Make sure the lock button on the top works and the home button isn't sticking.

Might be worth trying to find out if they are network barred. I know 2 people who bought iPhones on donedeal which turned out to be reported stolen and they were both left with expensive iPod touch's. Networks didn't want to know despite one of the sellers giving him a receipt with his full details on it. I get the feeling a lot of the 4s's for sale at the moment will be claimed against in the not so distant future.

If the mic is not working on an iPhone4, don't think its a cheap fix and don't let the seller convince you otherwise, walk away

Fair point, about the claiming. Just a word of advice for anyone purchasing a used 4/4S ( or any handset for that matter ):

    Slightly O/T but....

As soon as you receive it and insert your sim, call your network provider and get them to register the handset (IMEI) to your name & address, stating that you have purchased it, and take the name of the agent you were dealing with. This should prevent the seller potentially trying to pull a fast one and report it stolen for insurance purposes.
