First Christmas in Australia

    Hello everyone,

I have never posted here before but I always read the threads. I moved over here (WA) in October with my family. I have no complaints about Australia. I really feel like I live in paradise. I can't get over the beauty of this place.

However, with Christmas coming I feel so homesick and I miss my family. I thought it might be nice to have a thread where we can acknowledge (if needed) this loss. I found myself wandering around my local shopping centre carrying rolls of wrapping paper fighting back the tears. Probably not my best look

I wish everyone who has moved to Australia and who can't get home a very happy Christmas. I wish you all the best for the new year.

Sorry to hear you're feeling blue, maybe a quick look at the rainfall radar on the met.ie site will give you a pick up when you need it.
I think there's a Irish association of WA in Subiaco so if you really need an instant infusion of what you're missing you could always give that a try.

I'm the opposite, I'm not missing the xmas fuss in Ireland at all. Don't get me wrong, I do miss some family and friends but I always found xmas in Ireland OTT.

Christmas in Oz is nothing like Christmas in Ireland and no matter how hard you try it never will be so my advice is not to try and make it the same.
Celebrate sure but make it just about a day of fun and not of traditions that just don't fit in a hot climate.
If you really love all that tradition I would suggest having a little European style Christmas in winter.

Embrace it man you have your whole life to be at home, a year or 2 away and ul be a better stronger person for it.
Or just get pissed and it will be all over before you know it lol

Last Christmas, I too found myself wandering around Target clutching my wrapping paper and bawling my eyes out. And it was the middle of November! The trick to getting over the Christmas period in WA is to look at it as a nice break from work and a chance to get some relaxation and sun and beach time. Almost like going to Spain for a week in summer.

I do insist on cooking a big Christmas dinner for my boyfriend and his family complete with turkey and ham etc. They are all Australian and don't understand why I bother but I need ONE link to Christmas's past!

I wasn't too bad until I read your post and later that afternoonn found myself also wandering around my local Target, spotted the rolls of wrapping paper, thought of your post and there I was , suddenly blinded by tears!

To make it worse a few days later I sat in front of the telly watching Rick Steins Cornish Christmas followed by Love Actually, had several beers and was inconsolable!! :o

Not too bad now, I'm more or less igoring that it's christmas which is easy enough in the weather we're having here in the Wheatbelt - 39 degrees all last week!!

Happy Christmas all ....and keep smiling! :)

If anything is to learned from this thread it is best for those with a strong emotional ties to the old country to stay away from target around xmas!

Going to Target with the wife made me cry last Sunday. She spent $500 on pure crap for Christmas! Listen, keep the chin up. It gets easier. Just keep thinking of the reasons you came here in the first place. Have a good break and a happy new year to you all.
