Hi there. I am looking for a new laptop. Max I would spend is 500 but preferably something between 300-400. I heard the acer is very good. A friend of mine got one this time last year. Said he got it down from about 500 to 370 or something like that. Is that possible?

Just saying "Acers are good" is not enough.. some are very good and some are cheap crap... I usually just google the model name and find reviews of whatever model number I am considering...

Really laptops are a bit like cars now, is ford better than Toyota or Volkswagen etc etc everyone has the brand that they swear by/at... I know people who wouldn't touch an Acer, and others who think they're the best.
On the price thing you may get someone who'll do a deal like you mention but as the previous poster said, get the model number and google reviews of it, the reason the price is dropped may be just to get rid of a dud model....

I'd be one of those who'd say don't touch Acer with a barge pole, perhaps the person who told you that meant Asus? Anyways Samsung, Asus, MSI, Toshiba, Lenovo etc make decent machines, I'd nearly go as far as to say avoid other brands. Dell have some well built models also

No I enquired in a shop...They said that acer and toshiba are the best and not to go near Dell. Also, I have a friend who has acer and its very good. What do you find wrong with them?

Personal opinion but I've noticed a fair few even higher end Acer ones have poor build quality, touchpads which break down, cases that become flimsey over time etc. Sonys are a rubbish brand too despite people thinking they are brilliant. Acer also make Emachine laptops, bargain bin machines that are pritty poor.
As I said some Dells are poor (particularly the lower end) but some are quite good (especially the business oriented Latitude ones), it depends on the price you pay. To blanketly say Dells are rubbish is pritty silly, but bear in mind most shops bar DSG Group ones don't sell Dells so they will likely say that as there is more chance you buying one of theres.
Fwiw the mid range Acer machines are better in expierience than Sonys, but I've noticed people having problems with even the high end Acer machines (Ferrarri ones) that are due to shoddy build quality, hinge problems, touchpad problems, case problems etc...
Thats my advise, feel free to agree or disagree. Some people will of course have Acer laptops and there fine, just my expierience over the years they are not. There was actually a thread here a while back where Acer Netbooks had a poor lid which caused the screen to crack, it wasn't due to misuse and simply opening/closing it caused this over time,
