ok ESB have 2 types of connection, 12Kva and 16Kva
I assume 12Kva is sufficent for most houses.
Under what circumstances would you need a 16Kva connection?

Heat pumps and or heavy workshop machinery. If you do decide to change from 12 to 16 kVA in the future the cable from your house to the esb pole will need upgrading. Hope this helps.

Probably better to just pay the extra few quid and get the larger one then.

Was thinking that myself when I got connected. In the end I stayed with the 12kVA. I couldn't see a need in my own situation for 16kVA. It's times like this a crystal ball would come in handy :-)

If a heat pump doesn't use an electrical emersion as part of it's system then it's likely that 12kVA is plenty. I read that on the ESB connection material and it's a generalisation about the heat pumps I think.

What is the current price differential for installation and ongoing monthly charge?

It's about 1800 versus 2400. The tarriffs are not related to it.

just wondering what the difference in price is between the 12kva and the 16kva supply, i am at the application stage at the moment and im wondering if it is worth it to put in the 16kva just in case i ever need the extra power.
