    Hi

Every time I go for a run, for the first maybe 5k I get heartburn.

Has anyone else seen this? I thought it might have been my diet.

Tried running at different times with different meals but it nearly always happens.
It happened yesterday after a morning run an hour after breakfast.

Any suggestions help? It really makes the first 5k tough

I take it very handy the first 5k. I was going to take a Gaviscon before the next run. Just wondered if anyone else has heard of or had this problem

An hour is quite a short time to be running after eating. I know that some people can do it and I can do it if I'm doing a recovery run or not pushing the first half of a long run but not if I'm pushing it in any way. Have you tried running on a completely empty stomach? Also, you say that you take it easy, do you use a HRM and measure how easy you're actually taking it? You need to be quite fit to be able to run at a genuinely easy pace!

I'd also consider seeing a doctor, ideally not one that thinks that stopping running is the answer.

If it's a morning run, I'd try running on an empty stomach and having breakfast afterwards. I wouldn't eat anything for 2-3 hours before a run unless it's a really slow jog.

1 hour would be too soon for me.

Had a similar issue myself for a good while, ended up having an ECG! Can I ask if you drink much coffee as this turned out to be the source of my problems?

    Thanks for the replies

I was at a doctor two months ago to get my heart checked out for a separate issue. They found no problems at all. Stress tested and echo test etc.

I'll try running on an empty stomach next.

The first 5k I would be around the 130bpm mark. I don't drink coffee at all either - thanks for the feedback though JohnDozer

(i've only started running in the last few months)

Actually, that's probably my main problem!

Take Zantac for a week, in a lot of cases the heartburn is caused by acid escaping up the oesophagus from the stomach, Zantac is over the counter and will inhibit production of Hydrochloric Acid allowing whatever valve is not working to heal.

Cut down on dairy and orange/fruit juice. Cranberry juice is ok. dairy is milk , cheese , etc. huge difference it has made to me.

I've taken Gaviscon and seems to be ok - just not made into taking tablets of anymore unless I really have to.

    @ rom
I only have milk in my cereal then water in the day. Run at around 6pm
