    Hi,

A warning light came on in the car on Saturday morning.

    It said "Alternator workshop!"
The electrics in the car then began to shut down & I parked it in the car park where my gf works as I dissent think I'd make it home & the Skoda garage I got on to don't do service work on Saturdays.

Anyway, the car won't start at all now.

Anyone reccomend a mechanic that would call out to this car park & take a look or should I get a recovery vehicle to bring it to the Skoda garage?

Get a recovery vehicle to bring it to a non skoda garage. It will cost less to repair then. Where is the car located at the moment?

Insurance is covering the recovery vehicle.
    It's with me here now.......

He jumped the battery & I drove it to the garage & they're gonna fix it now hopefully have it sorted in next couple of days.

Few things need to be done now as its due a service as well & NCT is coming up in Feb.

    Have budgeted for around €500.
190 for two Pirelli tyres, 185 for alternator & the rest in the service. Hopefully I don't get any nasty surprises.

When we had this alternator workshop message on our Ford Galaxy which is a Volkswagen product the problem was not the alternator at all.

In fact the main lead from the alternator to the battery goes through a fuse board type arrangement where there were burned up connections which were causing the voltage generated at the alternator not to be applied to the battery due to the voltage drop (due to high resistance) between alternator and battery.

Could be a good idea to have the mechanic check that as part of the repair process.
