Station Refurbishments by Irish Rail

Six stations that I've seen on the DART are undergoing refurbishment at the minute. They are Blackrock, Booterstown, Salthill & Monkstown, & Dalkey. The funding given was €100,000 between them.

Dalkey got the smallest funding I understand with only €6,000 given to them. Booterstown got around €9,000. The largest funding is over €30,000 given to Dun Laoghaire,(not one cent of the money is spent on it to date).

This was only announced around 2 or 3 months ago.

I've seen so far that Blackrock and Salthill & Monkstown are the only ones making progress.

Blackrock got it's station building (interior & exterior) repainted from yellow to grey. Salthill & Monkstown and Sydney Parade getting new footbridges built. Sydney Parade has a temporary footbridge in place while the other is closed off to the public. Salthill is still using it's own footbridge.

An update on Dalkey & other stations around the country would be helpful.:)

Dun Laoghaire and Sydney Parade, I think.

€100,000 doesn't seem like a lot when it is spread over 6 stations, especially when one of them is allocated 30%.

It is noticble that all the stations are located on the southside. Are these funds part of an ongoing upgrade?
I'm not a regular DART user, just curious.

Five out of the six stations got €100,000 expect Sydney Parade.

Funding for Sydney Parade is unknown. Unless someone here can give a figure or I look it up myself? I don't mind.

Tánaiste Eamon Gilmore of Labour and Mary Mitchell O'Connor of Fíne Gaél made the announcement. I don't know who made the announcement for Sydney Parade.

Articles that I read were printed in my two local newspapers, The Southside People and Dun Laoghaire Gazette.

Bray's getting a new footbridge too, actually. I assume there was a bit more than 100K going around, just the ones you mentioned happened to be getting that.

Is this just for dart or can Newbridge and Kildare stations be included? Both are getting new footbridges as well as lifts and ramps.

Local politicians, local papers, local politics.

There are quite a few stations that have had minor improvements over the last year or two. This is a non story.

Work is being done on the Maynooth line as well I believe, with lights, new signage and new shelters amongst other things.

The Maynooth line is a poor cousin to the DART line(s). While staff have very pleasant working conditions, the passenger facilities are non-existent at virtually every station.

I would debate the need for any more money to be spent on DART stations at this time.

they're about to install a lift at Greystones too, and the station building has just been repainted (I'd like to see them spend some money widening the entrances - its a real bottleneck when a rush-hour train arrives).

Pearse has a lot of hoardings up, with mentions of an imminent refurbishment. Does anyone know when this is likely to materialise?

Killester has recently been painted in the lovely shade of grey that is doing the rounds. Not sure about any other northside stations. So the southside conspiracy doesn't stand up I'm afraid.

Personally, I much prefer the grey to the pukey yellow/orange colour that they used for the last batch of station repaints. Ironic that they chose grey in a recession though.

Agreed. The only stations with anything resembling a moderately decent set of facilities for passengers on the Maynooth line are the Dunboyne branch line and Navan Road Parkway.

    Malahide is pretty decent.

Did you miss that they are b**ching about the Maynooth line, not the DART?

Not exactly refurbishment but the overbridge at Maretimo (nr.Blackrock) which linked Lord Cloncurry's Towers has been removed. No doubt the towers will soon be removed too - due to being in danger of falling onto the line.

There is a problem with which I don't understand with Irish Rail.

Why, is there so much building time being allocated to making footbridges at Sydney Parade and Salthill & Monkstown. The one at Salthill only has a third of it done already, it has lifts planned to be built in the near future. The last time I looked, Sydney Parade hasn't started yet.

If we had something like what is happening from this video below, we would be living a lot happier.

Or someone could say, a bit ambitious would you think?

...and Maynooth, surely? Always open station building even if not manned, shop, toilets. Shelters are already in place from the upgrade works on-going.

Yes, work of some sort or another is being done on all Maynooth line stations (except surprise, surprise, Broombridge). The extent of the works vary from station to station, but they are all getting the new white-on-blue signage with minimal text that seems to be now de-riguer at Irish Rail stations in the Dublin area. I'm not sure it works as well or is quite as informative as the old version and it seems to have been done mainly to comply with the Official Langauges Act. Some oddities - at Leixlip Confey station - its good that they have now placed a totem at the main road, but it is up so high above the road that you wouldn't see it except by creaking your neck, which makes it useless. Also all the stations have apparently been given DART logos on their exterior signage, which given that electrification of this line has just been effectively cancelled is a bit mad of Irish Rail!

Clonsilla is getting a third platform, a terminal platform for trains to M3 Parkway. Leixlip Confey appears to have some work done to stop the city-bound platform falling into the canal. Most of the stations are also getting a lick of paint. All thats been done at Drumcondra is that the signage has been replaced, but it was the best-maintained station on the line anyway.

On a seperately slightly note, I noticed that the coin operated barriers patrolling the entrance to the jacks in Connolly have been removed.

Relatively new (about two years old I think), these rearly worked. Not sure how much these cost but it was definitly in excess of 10k I'd say. If they were removed due to unreliability, I'd be looking for my money back from the company that installed them.

It's unlikely they made 10k back in revenue as number 1), they were always broken and the barrier left open, and number 2), on the few days that they were working most people didn't pay, including me admittedly as I don't believe in having to pay for a pee while waiting for a delayed Enterprise train that cost me €35.00.

I don't live in Leixlip or Maynooth, so I can't comment on it. But as part of my judgement I did reserve the terminus stations, as generally they'd be of a higher standard anyway. Although I am surprised that there's a shop and toilets there. Last time I went through it about three years ago I don't recall seeing those there.

Like saying Connolly has toilets etc. It's a terminus, so it should have.

    Interesting.

Does that mean a shuttle will run between the M3 P+R and Clonsilla?

Who owns the bridge as a matter of interest? Given that it crosses the line then it can't surely be the railway company.

Drumcondra got new shelters put in same as the others bar broombridge and navan road.

I just came across this new photo today of the new bay platform at Clonsilla. The work nowadays seems flying on ahead of schedule.

    Clonsilla didnt either!

I am hoping that the budget to do station enhancement works are included in clonsillas budget because its not in the budget for the maynooth line station enhancements.

Have to say im impressed with what they have done to coolmine! What a difference a few small enhancements can do! Long overdue!
