Java won't update

When I try and update Java, the installer runs up to a certain point, and then just stops and shuts down. I thought there might be some sort of overwrite problem and uninstalled old Java with JavaRa but still won't update. Before I ran JavaRa, Java didn't turn up on my programs list, even though it was on the PC. It didn't work though. So am stumped. Have tried both IE8 and Chrome but no joy either way. Any ideas? When I looked up a file called jusched in notepad, error code 183 kept turning up. Any use?

you must run the update as adminstrator if using vista or win 7 for it to work
