Can't go wrong for the money....One of the lads on the mr2 forums said that particular corner is lethal and had its fair share of accidents!

Tell me about it, the road has few enough places to pass another car let alone places to go off the road without hitting anything:(

    looks fun

i swiftly avoided wollaping a fox out of it the other night on the ice.

thing ran across the road ... then ran back in front of me.. no time to brake... out and around i went.

hopefully the mondeo driver in front of me saw the fox or he wouldve thought i was being a lil **** !

    Chauffe, Marcel, chauffe!

a video of myself doing something stupid

You're being very hard on yourself there. You were driving at the appropriate speed for the circumstances. You skidded (RWD?) - in sub zero temps on an icy road - not your fault and your careful (slow) driving saved you from hitting something

    I say well done :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,858 ✭✭✭Bigcheeze

Don't know if the camera exaggerates it but the roads look seriously icy and are presumably untreated. On the video it does feel like you're going a bit fast for the conditions but again that could be the camera.

I was going slow enough all right but I know the road and should have accounted for the sudden dip on that bend taking the weight off the wheels hence why I said I did something stupid:o

It was a long day(up at 7am, days work, then chrimbo party) but it could defiantly have ended worse I guess.....especially considering the N2 wasn't in much better shape in places!

Jeez that road looks fairly icy, nice save.

Nice camera setup by the way

I managed the same thing in a FWD car.
My rears where near slicks, they where due to changed Saturday and Friday we had snow, as luck would have it.
Good tires on the front, bad ones at the rear, snowy corner=rear end trying to overtake me, no footage of incident, but can post pictures of skidmarks if requested! ;)
Caught it in time before hitting anything and with new rubber will hopefully get through winter unscathed.

Anytime ive tried a camera, it makes the car look like its travelling very fast. I wouldnt think he was travelling very fast but perhaps a bit more attention needed approaching the corner.

I thought the same thing, but looking at the side of the road and the distance he stopped in I doubt it was more then 20-25kph at the turn.

The fish eye lenses do exaggerated speed all right but there is no question I carried a little too much speed into that particular corner....wouldn't have lost traction if I hadn't.

Does the cam have any facility to auto record on power on? Also, found it cheaper than the link you posted -- Might be useful if people want one, might get one myself too considering the price!

    Without Hdmi (20 euro delivered)
    With hdmi (23 euro delivered)

Yep it starts recording once your turn the ignition on and stops when you switch it off.

You may have been half asleep but you were quick to wake up and catch it.. Nice cam as well.. Does it record motion ( if someone was at your car while unattended?) or does it only work with ignition on? Can you hardwire it to 12v in car?
    Cheers

eringobragh...how do you find the MR2 in general in bad weather? I spun mine the first day I drove it in wet weather, but I've had no scares since. Even in the ice, I found the rear stable, which was nice for a car with no TC or ABS.

What rev is yours? The early revs suffer from snap oversteer whch was rectified by Toyota with some suspension changes.

Mine's not too bad..it doesn't help that it has the wrong tyres on the back...

don't think it would be much use in the snow you just have to remember that its a RWD and take it handy on bends and round abouts ;) Mins got the ABS onboard but it hasn' kicked in yet :pac:

from my experience of recordings with dashboard cams I've found that they make it seem like you are travelling much faster than you really are. In this case I'd estimate that the speed was well under 50K, but maybe ND can confirm this.

(Fair play to him for posting it too, I only ever share things that make me look good. Only the pics of me rescuing kids from burning buildings, giving money to the poor, etc have been published. The ones of me kicking puppies and picking me nose got deleted straight away.)

It looks like you were driving nice and slow.

I would say nice save but I think the verge saved you, this happened me last year. The Car goes instantly and there is very little you can do.

I had winters on the front last year, FWD car, and ordinary new tyres on the back. Every 90 degree bend the rear wanted to go its own way.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,721 ✭✭✭E39MSport

No high horse but too fast in my opinion ipso facto.

Roads where I live can be in the same condition and demand the slowest of speeds.... especially when you see skid marks (huh huh) on the road.

edit: Nice footage OP, good setup

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 34,216 ✭✭✭✭listermint

Have to agree, i'd be crawling around those back roads specifically in those conditions they simply arent treated with grit or salt.

The speed was not right for the conditions at hand. If it was a treated road fair enough but its bare.

Has your horse got 4wd and snow tyres?

Well done ND, takes gut to admit fault. We all get caught out now and again, conditions were very poor, I think thats what happened as opposed to your own error. Put it to experience :)

That would have been Saturday night, yes? Was driving home at 3am in the Fiesta... You can imagine what the bog roads were like at that time! :pac:

    Firestone summer tyres all around.:)

For those saying i was going too fast for the conditions from looking at a fisheye lens recording, what speed do you think I was doing and what where the adhesion levels like on the road?

When I'm saying I was half alseep, its a figure of speech, It was a long day and when I got to my road(which is empty in the middle of the day never mind at 1:30am), having just driven 80kms in mostly the same conditions, I relaxed a little, started thinking about a nice cup of tea and a warm bed etc etc and, on that particular bend, didn't accound for how its dip and camber would effect a front heavy vehicle.....IMO that is what caused the slide, not speed, not being asleep or even the tyres.

The slide was 100% my fault...no question, as every slide that any driver has in ice or snow is their fault, but its this obsession with speed causes everything bugs me.

to answer your question i would think you are doing around 40-45 on the road. But as you said yourself it was too fast 'for that particular corner'.

I drive country roads to the other halfs and i can see the roads are the same. completely untreated i wouldnt venture over 30 due to ice because i like my car too much. (and my face for that matter).

but the locals fly around at 50 because they are 'used to the road' . ive seen around x4 locals in the bushes in the last year btw.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,223 ✭✭✭Nissan doctor

I was doing on or just under the 30kph mark entering that corner, as I had been going around all the other corners on the road and had been doing up to 60kph on the straighter sections, all while still within the available grip threshold.

Hence why I say speed was not causing factor as if it was, I would have crashed at the first corner I came to (same speed, same conditions etc).

I did say I carried a little too much speed into that corner as if I had accounted for the characteristics of the corner I would have gone a little slower or at least taken a different line through the corner to minimise steering input.

Saying I could have hit oncoming cars or pedestrians is also mute comment as 1, on such roads you can see oncoming cars well in advance and you would automatically adjust your driving style to suit coming up against other vehicles and 2, as for pedestrians....will if 5 people walk past my gate in a 24h period then that would be a busy day. My, and everyone's I presume, driving style would be different if it was a housing estate etc even that late at night.

I just feel that shouting 'speed' every time a car has an incident is dumbing down the whole thing.

And as for lack of verbal reaction....well sliding cars is not exactly foreign to me so while this one was unexpected, the feeling isn't anything out of the ordinary:p

But that was piss poor driving, obviously way too fast for the conditions, poor control & road positioning and zero reflexes for a possible recovery which didn't happen. Left the road and you were lucky there was run off!

ANyway nobody hurt and hopefully lesson learned!
