Thanks Galway rush - it seems there is no such device for an 8mm camcorder... so I need an 8mm camcorder now. If anyone has one I would love to rent it from them to convert my wife's home videos.

I have bought one of these:
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Electrovision-VHS-C-MOTORISED-CASSETTE-ADAPTOR/dp/B000LB0QIY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1324230813&sr=8-1

But I would like to surprise someone with an old video for christmas and don't think Amazon will get here on time... Any idea if I can get one somewhere in Galway city?

    No such thing.
    Sorry!

Simplest option is to look up a video converting business who specia;ise in converting from 8mm/VHSC etc to VHS OR preferably DVD.

There's a French guy down by Lower Domnich St who specializes in all things 8mm.

I bought a camcorder online and it worked. But most of the video's are in "long play" mode and the camcorder I have won't do that. There are 70+ tapes to convert - so I won't be going to get them done professionally. What I need is to rent a camcorder which has long play. The 2 I got from relations aren't working correctly with what seems to be dirty heads. (Bought a head cleaner but they are too badly damaged).

I had a look at the website - that guy is into super8 as opposed to hi8 or 8mm or Mini-DV. Thanks anyway

Long play tapes if played on a standard play machine will play "fast".
Very unusual for a camcorder not to have it.

Other possibility is that the tapes are Hi8.
These will play at normal speed but will appear distorted eg bw and jumpy on an ordinary 8mm machine.

I have converted some 8 and Hi8 to dvd or vhs using a usb adapter off ebay.
It takes forever and needs a very fast computer; in short a real pain.
