Cancelled my second box yesterday and plugged it out and took out card before I canceled it .... I read on here not so long ago that if I leave the box plugged out for long enough that the plus service I.e pause rewind and record will still work on the box when I eventually plug it back in to use For freesat

Can anyone confirm this ? If so how long does it need to be left unplugged?

    no.
It's just a receiver, no PVR.

My sky plus box isn't a pvr?

Not without a sub. With no sub it's just a receiver.

And amazingly, in the age of the hacker, I have never heard of anyone bypassing the system.

I have read a few accounts of the recording system remaining functional for years after the card was left out for 6 months. However, that was with blue "yellow house" cards. You could gamble with a white card and probably be disappointed. The only guaranteed way is to tell Sky, at the time of cancelling, that you want to pay the minimum monthly fee for the recording facility only. This is best done in writing to avoid misunderstandings. Once you've cancelled, it's probably too late.

I am one of those who has recording working on my Sky+ box after cancelling.
I disconnected the box before cancellation and put it in a wardrobe for six months. Then when I connected it up again recording facility was still working.

This was with one of the old blue "yellow house" cards and I have had free recording for a few years now.

Whether or not it still works with the white cards is still unclear.
A recent thread over on Digitalspy suggest it may be worth trying.

You can use the box straight away if you like, just don't put the card back into it for at least 6 months. I have a number of these cards (blue ones), all with the UK EPG on it and can record no problem.

The expired Irish cards are'nt great because with the Irish EPG you cant view and record the itvs, five channels, CH4 or E4.

I got my hands on a couple of expired white UK ones that record also, but only have them 3 or 4 months and I'm not going to chance putting them in a Sky+ box for another 3 months or so.

Or another option is to buy a Freesat+ box, they're in Amazon and Argos, prices starting at £126.99stg!!

A "Freesat+ HD" PVR is I think the best option. I'd get one with Diseqc. The Humax has a 3rd party channel editor that lets you combine non-Freesat channel on to the EPG.

There is no assurance any Sky+ (HD or not) box without sub recording today will record tomorrow. If you have it enjoy while it lasts. If cancelling assume you likely will not have recording.
