I see Alan Shatter is now proposing legislation to facilitate the deduction of fines accruing for the non payment of the new Household Charge at source from either salary or Social Welfare entitlements.

I suppose it begs the question why the actual charge itself isn't deducted at source (so that nobody actually incurs the penalty in the first instance)? I suppose it would make the pledges re: Income Tax and Social Welfare seem a bit more 'watery'.

Aw feck it - I was looking forward to seeing if it was actually possible for TDs to go to jail in Ireland.

Would deducting a non-payment fine directly from a person's salary and without a court order even be legal? =/

It did no harm to his career and like him or loath him, Higgins actually has principles, beliefs and courage; something we could do with a bit more of in this country.
