    Hey all,

I've decided I really want a Planet Ocean and am seriously considering taking the plunge and spending a ridiculous amount of money for me anyway on a watch. Would love those with a bit more know how to pass out a bit of advice on the best options for picking one up.

Looking ADs and prices seem to vary a bit... is there much room to bargain with these? Better to buy here or the UK? Also, would be happy to get a good one pre-owned preferably and would be interested in hearing peoples views on going about this.

    Cheers, Doc

I'm actually in the same position as you Doc. I'm looking at a 2201.51.00 or even the newer generation 232.30.42.21.01.003 with the 8500 movement.

I've been looking at watchfinder.co.uk, watchuseek and Chrono24, but I'm also not ruling out the ADs. I'm aware TZ-UK may be a good bet, but I can't register at the moment.

When did the newer generation come out? Much price difference?

Yeah, find access to some of the bigger sites a bit of a pain. Tried previously to join TZ-UK but couldn't register. Seems you can't even access the sales forum on some without a certain number of posts.

Unless you want to spend big money on the newer models or a new older model €3000 I'd recommend buying a pre-owned one. Plenty for sale on TZ-UK for around €1600. Bought mine pre owned and love it.

Don't know too much about specifics, I'm a newbie to watches. There is a price increase on the newer models though.

The new range includes a new blue version. It looks amazing, but I'd really prefer it in a 42mm size.

Think i'd be with you on the 42mm. Got to be black dial for me.

Passing through Heathrow a bit lately and they have an Omega boutique. Planes gonna be delayed some day soon and I'm going to be in trouble!

Corrs Jewellers in Powerscourt centre in Dublin has a 45mm one with orange bezel, on bracelet, for €2000. Might be some movement on the price if you haggle?

I did say black but the orange does run it close. Really has the Wow factor!

Lunn's in the Queens arcade in Belfast had 3 or 4 PO's on display last Tuesday including the 45mm with orange bezel. Great IWC and Patek Philippe displays. I left a trail of drool around the store :o

I've had an orange bezel version myself in the past. Very cool watch, and a bit different. If it were me though, I'd go with the black strap with orange stitching for it. Lovely combination.

Agree with that. Lovely combo on the orange. For me it would be either that or the black on a bracelet.

You reckon that is a about the going rate Bullseye? Think that is the way I'd prefer to go about it too. Would be quite happy with a quality pre-owned rather than maybe paying double new.

Well I sold my 42mm version, on bracelet, on tz-uk for €1400 a couple of years back. The prices seem to have gone up slightly since then, but I reckon €1600-€1700 should be achievable. Also keep an eye on adverts, as a few have sold on there over the last year.
I think you'd be mad to buy a new one to be honest.

If I can get a 42mm for €1600 I'd faint :pac:. Not a huge fan of the latest incarnation at all. Something about a display back on a 'Professional' dive watch that doesn't seem right.

I've always shyed away from the Plant Ocean in the past due to the weight and the fact it doesn't slip under a shirt cuff easily due to the thickness. I have to admit that it's grown on me in recent months. MitchBuchanan's 42mm with the rubber strap during the summers GTG was the catalyst :D and also the fact that the 2201.50 is discontinued. Was in London last September and the amount of PO's I spotted was in double figures.

I would second the pre-owned route due to the savings involved. RRP for the 2011 Planet Ocean is €4,500 and for the discontinued is €3,300 IIRC. I also like the fact that I could have the 3 Omega 'classics' i.e. Speedmaster (bought new), Bond Seamaster (Pre-owned) and Planet Ocean (Pre-owned) for the price of a New Rolex Submariner.

Is it possible to buy the new model with the solid back?

I don't think so tbh. You might be able to get an aftermarket Jobie made but I wouldn't bother. I know they wanted to show off the in-house movement but I prefer the solid caseback on my PO.

Oh and if you do get the PO. Try and get it in the bracelet. I bought mine that way and got the Omega rubber strap after. The little extra expense at the start will save you in the long run.

I agree that a display caseback on a tool watch seems kind of silly.

On the other hand it does mean you get to see that lovely movement, (and show off).

Overall though I prefer the discontinued model despite some technical improvements.

I was all over the PO (prefer the old one on balance for lots of reasons but especially the value you get on a good new one nowadays) and nearly bought one a couple of weeks ago...but ultimately I can't see it displacing my Seiko MM 300 and I don't think I want to keep two high end dive watches on the go at the same time...

...then again...I'd ship on the PO with little difficulty whenever I got sick of it :D

Might scratch the itch in the new year if the right watch comes up :D
