i was shooting a gig in the olympia last week and managed my way up into the gods, where there was a fantastic viewpoint of the entire auditorium and I reckoned a good photo opportunity. however, i was a little limited in my gear, shooting on a crop sensor 400d camera and my widest lens being the 17-35 2.8L. So, I spent a while waiting for a long enough use of the blinders on stage to be able to take 4 or 5 consecutive photos with the intention of stitching them in photoshop later. I eventually got the shots and headed back downstairs. I ran in Enda Doran (think he's a member here) on the way and was showing him the shots, when, he kindly offered me a lend of his 5d ii and a 15mm fish lens to try that instead. I was actually amazed at the field of view that that setup captures. I've made a comparison of the 4 stitched photos vs the 1 fisheye photo below. full frame + fish lens are now on my shopping list...

What does the 15mm equate to on a crop sensor? 9mm ish?

Samyang 8mm might be a good option for the 400d. :D

this is true. although, my 400d is very very old and worn now, so as soon as it breaks, i'll be getting something fullframe.

this post, however, was more about my amazement at how little I was covering by shooting 4 portrait shots and stitching. I thought I'd get a way wider shot that way.

You should see my 8mm Fish Eye on my full frame :D

15mm fisheye on full frame is a good compromise, Canon have brought out an 8mm - 15mm fisheye L lens but its an f4 so you lose a lot of light gathering that the original 15mm has.

Can be a 360 if needs be. Here's a few - some with lens correction in LR3 which is great craic altogether.

Iamnothim, how come your fisheye shot is square, rather than circular (as per PullandBang's post above)? I thought fisheye shots were always circular (the sole reason I've avoided and hate them altogether. Don't like the circular look at all).

    Just curious...

It's because he's on a cropped sensor. My lens gives a square photo on a cropped body but you get the full circle on the full frame. The "square" shot of BuzzLightyear lying on the ground is after the round shot was Lens Corrected in Lightroom.

But he says he used a full frame to take the shot?

Ah, I was thinking my 8mm but he was using a 15mm which may give a square image.

I would imagine the first image isn't his.

They're both his, I do believe.

That will teach me to read the OP properly.

The 15mm fisheye is 180 degree's diagonally across the frame, where Denis's 8mm lens is a circular fisheye
