Can anyone tell me if its safe to put 165/65/14 tyres on a 06 Toyota Aygo.
It currently has 155/65/14 - which are expensive as this was the first and last year that Toyota used this size.

    Thanks for your help.

If you fit 4 then it shouldn't make a huge difference, there isn't much between the two sizes.

Should be ok as long as that size was standard fitment later on.

165/60 would be nearer to the current rolling radius but either would be fine IMO

Thanks for the help but I don't understand how the rolling radius changes when its the width of the tyre thats different? Is it not the width of the tyre thats 165??? I am really not that good at this...:confused:

Whatever the manufacturer originally put on the car there is an acceptable width difference of 10mm either way but truth be known you could go 20.

The tyres you're looking at should be fine.

Tyres are a weird mix of measurements.

165 = tyre width in mm, 65 = side wall height as a % of the width and 14 is the wheel size in inches.

So 65% of 165 is bigger then 65% of 155 so 165/65 tyres will be taller then 155/65.

The size change you want to make is fine as long as your changing all 4.
What prices are you getting though?

Thanks for that I understand it now. I am changing all 4 tyres, they are the original tyres on the car and they need replacing. I can get part worn off a chap in Palmerstown, off Adverts. He quoted nearly new €25 a corner, good brand fitted and balanced. Its the wifes car and 06 Aygo with only 20k on it so they are rotten and cracked and need new ones. They are expensive from Toyota over €200 for replacing, its recession time so need to shop around. Got a good deal from your man, will give all 4 and 2 for mine, Ford Focus all for €160, haven't bargained him down yet. Thanks for all the info. Feel a bit safer changing the tyres to 165. Thanks again.:D

Main dealers can charge stupid money for tyres but €200 is only €50 a tyre which is cheap depending on brand they are supplying. Have you got any quotes from local tyre centers?

Well if that doesn't bate Bannagher. The thread is all about discussing and understanding the pros and cons of tyre sizes and then OP in order to save 100 poxy quid or so wants to stick 4 worn tyres of unknown safety or condition on his wife's car. If money is that tight, sell one of the cars and at least put decent tyres on the one you keep.

One of the new growth industries in the Far East is vulcanizing / branding high-end logos onto cheap-as-**** tyres / remoulds for the "used tyre" market in the west.

I give up. If you don't value your wife's safety or your own OP at least think of the other road-users who may be involved if one of your poxy "part-worn" tyres lets go.

Just for reference, camskill will deliver 4 pirellis for 189, add 30 for fitting and youd have a way better tyre than whatever Chinese shoite the dealer was peddling
