Ok, so here is the deal. I just got a new sky box and have it plugged into the tv in my room, have a coaxial cable going into the satellite dish i got with it, and placed the dish outside bout 5 metres away from the one the sky guys installed. We still have full package with sky in two rooms, but I just want the FTA channel in my room? It is not pick up a signal. Anyone have any recommendations? I figured it might be where I have the dish situated but i have moved it around quite a bit and still no luck. Any help appreciated thanks

Sorry just to add, there was a spare jack on my sky dish and i plugged that in? Do i have to manually tune the channels or something?

What is the box telling you? Is it still reporting 'no signal'?

yeah it is saying plug it out and leave it for 5 minutes, which i did but still the same. Also I am updating the system software on the box by holding backup and plugging the skybox in, so it now say on the TV "updating system software, this may take up to ten minutes" .... So I will let you know when that finishes

So it successfully updated while connected to your existing, functioning dish?

Thanks for the replies, I have just left the dish I got with it, and am now using the one that we actually get sky with. It is on the wall, and we have sky in the house on that. Is the locked or something that it wont allow me to get the channels. I am going into sky tv guide then system setup and then signal test but nothing is happening?

yes it successfully updated. This must mean it is connected right?

it says during software update not to disconnect from mains or satellite dish, it doesnt say software updated afterwards, it just goes blank, then the sky box turn off and then turns back on again?? Im guessing that is successful?

Can you try another box on the cable you are using & see if it works?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 213 ✭✭bobbaggio

Yeah, I will take it out of my kitchen and switch them. See if either of them work in different positions.

Ok, I took the kitchen sky box out and brought it to my room and vice versa, the kitchen one with the new skybox is working grand, it has an old skycard but I was watching rte one on it at least. And the one i brought from the kitchen in the bedroom now is not working, so it is the cable in the bedroom.

is there any reason why it wouldnt work on the existing dish? There are four connections on the dish and three of them are being used, so I plugged it in the spare one. and this is where the problem is coming from?

Might be just a dodgy connection, take a look here or here.

yeah, I have dont that peter? I don't know whats wrong with it? But you're right, it must not be a proper connection.

    There's a video guide here.

Make sure you don't have any of the braid touching the inner conductor.

Ok so we plugged it into my T.V and eliminated the Skybox, and we pick up RTE and Network 2, so it isnt the connections and they are working, mayb not be great but they are working, So I am guessing it just wont pick up a sky signal? I have left it plugged in and it continues to check for listings every 2 minutes or so. See if that works? If not.......it'll be back to watching VHS !!!

So you have/had 1 end of this cable connected to the Sky dish lnb & the other to the tv's aerial input? Presumably it's the analogue versions of RTE you're picking up?

This would suggest that you live in an area where the terrestrial signal is strong & the cable is functioning as an aerial. Maybe you should post pics of the connections on this cable, particularly the one at the lnb.

Yeah I just wanted to make sore that the dish was working and the connections were okay. I can post pictures If that would help?

Well, you already proved that the box is alright, so if your newly installed cable or connectors aren't the problem, that only leaves the lnb & it's more likely to be the former.

You have to rule things out one at a time: you could try your cable on a different lnb output but that would mean disturbing the existing connections & probably to no end as I suspect there'd still be no signal.

Certainly, connecting the cable directly to the tv doesn't really help in any way.
