Both deserve it with Lyles major victories and Allisses commentary over the last few decades has been second to none imo.
The British Open wouldn't be the same without him behind the microphone.

Apparently Alliss was quite a good golfer too. He played in 8 Ryder cups and won 23 tournaments.

I was surprised when I saw him on TV recently playing in a Ryder Cup as I never knew he did.

I always just associated him with commentary and never golf. But you are right for the commentary alone he deserves to be there.

Unfortunately he got a dose of the yips and so pretty much stopped playing professional golf if I remember correctly.

Can't say i ever saw him playing, i only remember him for his commentary.
I knew he played in the Ryder Cup but never though he played in it 8 times or won 23 events around the world. My respect for him has only increased.

The Allisses (Peter and Dad) were the first father and son to have played Ryder Cup.

He's an old man, now, but a wonderful institution in the world of Golf. Never afraid to be a bit risqué, and always up to speed on the game. A little bit too much was made of his slip-up when Mickelson won the Masters a few years back, (he mistakenly thought Phil had tied for a play-off and didn't realise he had actually won) but, on the whole, he's well deserving of the award.

Couldn't agree more with Alliss. I generally take the first few days of the Open off work and pretty much watch the whole thing through from start to finish. His wit and observation is incredibly entertaining throughout the whole four days whenever he is on air. I find Andrew Cotter quite good and he is clearly the long term replacement for Alliss when he does retire. Pretty sure the Open will remain free to air on BBC rather than ever allowing Sky to nab it.

Some of Alliss quotes I remember

Of a shot Tiger played into 13th green in Agusta one year
"A bit like Kate Winslett, A little bit heavy, almost perfect!" (It's an old one, originally said about Elizabeth Taylor.)

Of Tiger, spotted smiling one day "My God. If I had teeth like that, I'd smile all day!"

Of Freddy Couples and his languid style, "If Golfers were dogs, Freddy Couples would be a Labrador!"

Peter Alliss had a good programme a number of years ago where he would go around to different golf clubs and play a round with fairly ordinary ability members. As far as I remember the programme was about the club and it's history, not necessarily the big name clubs but courses Peter himself found interesting, and they'd show a number of holes as they played their round.

Anyone remember that or what it was called? I remember one round where he played a game in Scotland on a tricky course and the guy he was playing with (think his name might have been Toby) was a bit of a hacker. It was interesting viewing and nice to see how an average amateur golfer compared with a retired older professional.

It was called Around with Alliss.

Alliss "Oh.., I'm not sure this is the right move." (Of Jean Van de Velde taking out his driver on the eighteenth tee in the last round of the 1999 Open at Carnoustie)

If only he'd been caddying for JVDV!

I love listening to Peter Alliss ..... especially when the camera is looking at the crowd or more importantly, a young lady in the crowd :D

He played with Christy O'Connor in the Ryder Cuo and the two were good friends ....... Alliss always talks fondly of 'himself' or ' the great Christy O'Connor' as he calls him.

When the camera showed Mike Weir (I think) hugging his wife after winning the Masters, Alliss hazarded a guess as to the conversation: "You little beauty, now you can buy me that new kitchen I wanted" !

I'll never forget his commentary on Van De Veldes meltdown. He said something along the lines of "that man should be taken away and hosed down and given a large brandy" :D

Both of them are very worthy recipients. Alliss has been a joy to listen to for so long now it will be very hard to enjoy golf on the bbc the day he retires. The new breed just don't have the Alliss touch.
