The power block or the jack could be nackerd. Rule out the lead by using it on a similar laptop if you can get your hands on one. It would explain why it wont run off battery either. If the mobo was toast you should still get some kind of activity ie fans spin up etc

Right, well that will tell you if theres a problem with the power block, as for the power jack youll have to open it up and test the voltage from the power cable attatched to the motherboard, but some laptop motherboards the jack is solderd directly to the board in that case im not to sure. Theres also a fuse on the motherboard which could be the problem even if the lead and jack test fine :-\ sorry i couldnt be more specific with a solution.

I have a similar problem with my Laptop it is a toshibha - when you turn it on it starts for about 5 secs and then dies, when you put in the charger it doesn't even do that?
Had someone look at it and thinks I might need a new motherboard how much are they- will I lose any of the stuff like Photos on it?

Yours started meaning its getting power, best to rule out if its an external problem first before ripping into internals. All your pics are on your HDD and should be fine, unless it got hit with a power surge while plugged into the mains. That could damage more than a mobo.

I actually only found that out when i tried to find a way of testing the voltage on the mobo if the jack is solderd to it :-/

I havent had much dealings with replacing bad power jacks and fuses are part and parcell of electricity so i posted as i found it, seemed plausible. See step 3 of 6.

Is it only happening when running on the battery?
