    Hi there,

could anyone please tell me if they have ever had any dealings with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy? Ive been referred by my GP for this for chronic generalised anxiety disorder and don't really know what to expect from the sessions or appointment.

Have you found it has helped you with your issues , problems, worries and what does it focus on, what strategies do they use for coping mechanisms?

Mods, im not looking for medical advice, rather feedback from the type of therapy and weather has or hasn't been successful for other individuals and a small insight as to what the therapy entails.

    Look forward to some replies.

    Many thanks

    Hi there,

I will give you my general experience with CBT. CBT works wonders and is known as a very simple and affective form of therapy. It's been said to be as affective (if not more) than most types of anti-depressant medication. However, in my experience of CBT (which lasted 18 months), I found that it takes a lot of strength and dedication. The therapist acts like a trainer and gets you to do certain tasks in order to prove or disprove certain thoughts or feelings. For me, I attended CBT for so long and found a great improvement, but decided to stop and take a 'medication vacation' as I found that I just wasn't taking the time to get myself properly.

Basically, CBT is a great support but don't think it'll solve all your problems for you. You have to meet the therapist half way and really throw yourself into their hands. If you work at it hard enough you will overcome your problems.

    :)

I went for a general panic disorder and it helped me end, just go in with an open mind, take it in and it should help! and let us know how it goes!

I started CBT in feb i think it was and after going once a week for about 8/9 weeks it soon became every second week and now once a month ! I didnt believe in it at all whatsoever as i was getting treated for anxiety and claustraphobia which together is defintitly not fun and in my frame on mind just could not be fixed!!! i have been claustraphobic for as long as i can remember it just got unbareable when my anxiety reached peak !

as the other guys said u really need to throw youself into it and it is tough work but because i only developed my anxiety last july (as far as im aware)i really wanted to fight this thing off and the difference is amazing !! i hope your finding the same !! and best of luck ! theres light at the end of the tunnel it just takes a little work !

I'm starting CBT next week, its great to see positive stories.

I have a terrible fear of heights and as I'm going to America soon, I don't want to miss out on all the attractions by staying with my feet firmly on the ground.

I've never tried to overcome this before so fingers crossed it works as well for me and i'll be telling of my success in the coming weeks
