whirling noise

I sat into and got a spin from my friends 06-GT golf tdi140bhp remapped from 105bhp. I noticed when he changed gears you could hear very clearly a whirling noise very similiar to that of a police siren. Yes it was like that. I asked him what was that noise and he said that the previous owner put something into the engine to do that. By the sounds of it I thought his turbo was on the way out. Is this a type of valve that was installed or what is it? I know in my tdi car I might hear a whirling noise but its very slight barely noticable. Can someone inform me of this noise that is coming from my friends car? Thanks.

had the same, its the turbo! Police siren rings a bell, always looking around me just in case haha.

early signs for it going boom. Does he have any loss in performance? Slow to build boost? Smoky?

No definately not. When engine is slowing down or speeding up you hear it clearly its like a very slow sounding police siren. More of a whistling noise if anything and you can hear it clearly when car is travelling slowly.

Dump valve / BOV is another option where you'll hear it spool followed by a nice whut usssssh, or a flutter depending on which one they've got on.g.php

This is like a very slow whistle police siren. Sounds like the turbo spooling. It doesn't sound like any valve type system. At Low revs you can hear it clearly. I thought those valve systems only make noise when changing gear, would I be right in saying that? This whirling noise in the cars engine keeps going even without gear changing.

One of the reasons for Blow Off/Dump Valves is to prevent Flutter. Flutter is when air is pushed back through the spinning turbo in the wrong direction when the throttle is shut. BOV/DV vent this surplus air out so this doesn't get pushed back through the turbo. This fluttering also slows your turbo spinning so thats why these valves are added.
