Income tax query

I am starting a new job next week having being unemployed the last five months. As I am too late for the December payroll which is being done this week, I am now going to be paid in January for the last two weeks in Dec and all of January.
How will this work in relation to my tax credits, will all the January payment including income earned in December be part of the 2012 tax year.
Also how do I go about claiming a tax refund in these circumstances.

    Thanks

It's based on when it is paid. Since it is being paid in January it must be taxed in January using 2012's credits. See link below section 13.
