Dealer knowledge of DSO

Writing this with regard to living within reach of current analogue/DTT UK tv transmitters.
Talking to work colleagues friends etc, some of them have been told by dealers various inaccuracies about what will happen when DSO occurs.

    • UK Freeview is completley different to Saorview
    • Saorview STB will not be suitable for UK DTT reception
    • Will have to get a satellite system to continue to receive UK channels
    • Current UK reception will 'fade away' over the next 10 months
    • Will have to get a 'Digital Aerial'

Do these dealers really not know the facts or are they just trying to push people into getting unecessary equipment.

    The above could be rewritten:
    • UK Freeview HD STB/tv is similar to Saorview STB/tv
    • Saorview STB/tv should be suitable for UK DTT reception
    • If you currently receive good analogue UK reception, you will more than likely receive UK DTT when Transmitter power is increased
    • Current UK reception will change a week or so before DSO
    • May need an aerial upgrade'
As I wrote in another thread the red button issue may be the only unknown issue where incompatability may occur.

Hope there are no major misunderstandings in the above and am writing this having used both systems to receive each others channels.

    1. A Saorview STB/Tv will only show SD Freeview unless it has a DVB-T2 tuner. Some STBs will only permit one system at a time.
    2. DSO has already happened in Wales, so the signal is already at full power. The only change is Mt. leinster clearing Ch45 after our DSO.
    3. Many people have had problems with Freeview equipment not handling Saorview EPG and summertime.

You mean "Freeview HD". Saorview boxes will mostly tune "SD Freeview".

    no,
N.I. Transmitters and Irish Clermont Carn and Holywell Hill will all increase power.
Clermont Carn and Holywell Hill will change channels in the same group they are in
Mt. Leinster will change to Group A, power unchanged.

If you think any important info is missing on 2nd link I'll get it added

If you think important stuff missing on the 1st link contact RTE or "saorview" Brian here on Boards.

Mt. Leinster is buggering off to Group A and reusing the Analogue TV3 and TG4 channels for Muxes 1 and 2 and wideband aerials tend to be crap in Group A ( they work better higher up) .

Therefore people with EXISTING analogue TV3 and TG4 aerials should NOT GET A NEW AERIAL between now and ASO if tuned to Mt Leinster UNLESS they want Preseli as well.

Furthermore Blaenpwlf has all the other 2x channels up to 28 and any new Saorview channels will have to be above 28.

Higher gain "so called" wide band aerials are really Group BC unless they are "log periodic" type. It's physically not possible to have decent gain and wideband on a Yagi, which is why Log periodic aerials exist.

    ....
    That's what I said/meant, SD only.

The Mt Leinster reference was meant only in relation to reception from Wales.

Maybe my grammar is slipping
