Hi, the garage replaced the engine in my car at their own expense after an incident with the old one, i've had the car back about 2wks but not really done much milageand last week we noticed it was a bit chuggy when accelerating and then on friday other half was driving it and said it drove like a bag of nails when he tried to get it over 100. Saturday the emmissions light came on momentarily while the car seemed like it was going to die, then went off again and the car carried on as normal. It came on today after chugging again and hasn't gone back off. The garage agreed to look at the car again tomorrow.

Is this likely to be to do with the engine? Any help at all would be great as i'm really useless :o

This hasn't got anything to do with the oil change.thats very very unlikely.id say they might of mayb left a sensor disconnected or something.or just by coincidence there is a fault in the sensor possibly a faulty sensor is more likely the story hear just out of intrest what's the make model and year of the car.

Thanks hope so although a sensor wouldn't really make it chug would it?

It wasn't an oil change but a complete engine they replaced after they caused damage to mine. I have another thread on here about it but don't know how to link them sorry.

Its a volvo, model s40, engine 2.0 petrol, year 2005, transmission manual.

If the car is running very poorly like you say, it should be quite easy to find the problem. Could well just be an air leak where an intake pipe has come loose. Would be best to go back to who fitted the new engine...

Oh sorry ya I remember now.as stated a sensor would definitely cause it to chug like that or it could be a pipe loose also if they have the old engine they should have all the sensors and pipes off it so shouldn't really cost n e thing.and also things like that do happen after engine changes but they normally happen when we still have the car in the garage while testing it after the fitting of the new engine.sounds like the garage need a wake up call

Thanks thats useful to know, they said they'd had the car running for hours at a stretch before they gave it back to me. The thing is sometimes its ok it seems to be a problem when i accelerate ( and the light is on continuously now) so just leaving it running probably wouldn't have picked it up.

I surprised the garage haven't fix this properly fixed this.

If they've checked all the connections are done.

My guess would either be the MAF sensor or coil pack.

Surely they could do a diagnostic scan test and narrow down the fault.

Ya your right.well in our place cars are test driving for two days and mileage put up on the before there returned to the customer.seriously ur having a bad run with ur garage time to find a new mechanic I think.but don't let them fob u off anything that needed to be done should of being sorted befor u got the car back.we had to BMW x5s in in our garage in the past while for engine rebuilds one was returned yesterday and the other the day before.but then cars were finished last week and drive then for the weekend as to make sure everything was 100percent remember its your car and we provide a service.so ur the one that has to be happy with the results

To be honest i'm completly racked off with the whole thing now and am worried they'll tell me its nothing to do with the engine but i don't see what else it could be . I can't believe all this hassle has been caused by the repairing of an oil leak.

Perhaps thats what they'll do tomorrow and run a diagnostic.

The the light is on then the fault will be stored in the ecu.

This garage is utterly taking the p1ss out of you at this stage IMO.

Op was advised to withhold money owed to garage just in case something like this cropped up. Hope they did that.

Yes we did. We'd said we'd pay on the 15th after we'd had the car back for a couple of weeks. Garage weren't to happy about it but we're very glad we did.

Wish me luck i'm taking it back down at 10am :(

Well they had the car in today and just got it back. Said it was the plugs so they've put a new set in

Think we need a crash course in mechanics :o:o
We have no idea but it seems ok and the emmissions light has gone out on dash so fingers crossed.

Seems to be only drove it about 10km cus it was late when we got it back but other half going to take it out tomorrow as i really have lost faith in the car at the moment so am reluctant to do much in it.

The only positive thing here is that a dodgy plug will cause the engine to chug. It can also bring on the light. So you may well be to the end of it. Good luck.
